The seizure comes as AUSTRAC rolls out tougher AML rules for virtual asset service providers, including mandatory travel rule compliance from July 1, 2026. New South Wales Police say they have seized 52.3 bitcoin linked to alleged darknet marketplace activity, describing the haul as one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures of its kind in Australia. In an official release, the Cybercrime Squad said detectives executed a search warrant at a home in Ingleburn, southwest Sydney, on May 4, recovering electronic devices that "contained 52.3 bitcoin valued at approximately $5.7 million

Yahoo News Australia reports that both men have now been charged over alleged roles in supplying prohibited drugs and moving more than $100,000 in crypto tied to the dark web.

What makes this different is that the country’s five biggest exchanges — , , , , and  — are already working directly with the National Tax Service to build reporting systems ahead of the rollout.
That’s a strong signal that the government isn’t planning another delay.
Under the new rules:
✔️ Annual crypto profits above 2.5 million won (around $1,800) will be taxed
✔️ Investors will face a 20% capital gains tax
✔️ An additional 2% local tax brings the total to 22%
✔️ The rules will apply to more than just trading profits
According to officials, income from:
Crypto transfers
Lending
Certain digital asset activities
could also fall under the new tax framework.
What’s even more interesting is the scale.
South Korea estimates that around 13.26 million investors could be affected — showing just how deeply crypto has become part of everyday financial life in the country.
The government also addressed one of the biggest questions: “What about overseas exchanges and DeFi platforms?”
Officials say international reporting systems like CARF (Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework) will help track offshore crypto activity as global cooperation around digital asset taxation expands.
In other words, regulators are no longer focusing on banning crypto.
They’re focusing on integrating it into the traditional financial and tax system.
There are still unanswered questions around:
Staking rewards
Airdrops
DeFi lending income
But separate guidelines for those categories are expected later.

Experienced Analyst Warns Bitcoin Followers to Be Cautious During the Summer: Here’s Why
Renowned market analyst Benjamin Cowen, in his latest video, discussed US labor market data and its potential impact on the stock market and Bitcoin. Cowen stated that the labor market currently appears resilient, but investors should exercise caution during the summer months.

Cowen stated that the latest data showed the unemployment rate remained stable at 4.3%, which was within expectations.

The analyst stated that the fact that layoffs and initial jobless claims remain at historically low levels supports the view that the US economy is not yet in a recession.

However, Cowen, referring to data from previous years (2023, 2024, and 2025), reminded that unemployment claims generally tend to increase in June and during the summer months. The analyst said, “I don’t think we’re in recession zone unless initial jobless claims reach the 300,000 level.”

Cowen, commenting on the S&P 500 index trading at all-time highs, said this was not unusual for “midterm election years.”Pointing to similar cycles in 2014 and 2018, the analyst noted that in those years the market rose until September, but was then followed by sharp corrections.

Cowen, who maintains a cautious and bearish stance on Bitcoin, said that BTC remains weak compared to the stock markets. Noting that while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ are hitting record highs, Bitcoin is far from its peak, the analyst argued that a potential correction in the stock markets could drag Bitcoin to new lows.

Cowen stated, “Bitcoin is currently weaker than other assets, and when those assets enter a window of weakness in the second half of the year, I expect Bitcoin to also move downwards and likely hit a lower bottom.”
