The 24-hour trap: Why the UK’s new crypto rules could catch some firms off guard

The U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is proposing crypto rules that could quietly expand the definition of custody, potentially sweeping in platforms and software providers that don’t consider themselves custodians.

The FCA published its Cryptoasset Perimeter Guidance on Wednesday, which includes a few technical traps for firms handling clients' crypto assets.

The rules draw a red line at the 24-hour mark for custody. Any firm or crypto platform or app holding client assets for longer than a day during trade settlement will likely fall under the regulated custodian classification, which triggers a requirement for a full safeguarding-license.

Validators and node operators also need to proceed with caution. The regulator warned those involved in those activities will lose their pure tech exemption the moment they provide “added value” features. That includes things like user dashboards, yields or reward-compounding tools. In those cases, they must seek full approval for arranging staking.

“Our new perimeter gives us the tools to strengthen protections for consumers and support fair, transparent and orderly markets as the sector matures,” the FCA stated in the paper.

Also noteworthy is that for the first time, the FC has addressed the “shadow custody” issue. The financial watchdog made it clear that if a crypto service provider allows it to theoretically override a client’s authority, it is officially a custodian even if it guarantees it will never exert that power.

“The fact that an arrangement involves smart contracts, public blockchains or some elements of decentralisation does not determine the perimeter position or place the arrangement outside of regulation,” the document noted.

The largest corporate ether holder posted a $3.8 billion quarterly loss as its pivot from mining to ETH accumulation continues.

Bitmine Immersion Technologies has rapidly transformed from a mining firm into a leveraged Ethereum treasury, doubling its share count in six months and raising more than $10 billion to accumulate nearly 5% of all ether.

The company now holds 4.87 million ether at an average cost of $2,206 per token, making it the largest corporate etherholder, but it reported a $3.8 billion quarterly net loss driven by fair-value accounting and derivatives losses rather than realized losses on its ETH stake.

Bitmine's operating business has largely shifted to staking, which generated almost all of its $11 million in quarterly revenue, while general and administrative expenses have soared to $75 million for the quarter, underscoring a sharp mismatch between costs and operating income.

itmine Immersion Technologies has turned itself into the Ethereum version of Strategy, doubling its outstanding shares in six months and raising over $10 billion in equity to amass nearly 5% of all ether (ETH) in existence.

It reported a $3.8 billion quarterly net loss in Tuesday's 10-Q filing, with share count (common stock) going from 232 million to nearly 494 million between August 31 and February 28.

Additional paid-in capital jumped from $8.36 billion to $18.55 billion over the same period, and those funds went straight into ETH.

As of April 12, Bitmine held 4.87 million ether at an average cost of $2,206 per token, making it the largest corporate Ethereum treasury globally and the second-largest corporate crypto treasury behind Strategy.

Ether traded near $2,325 on Wednesday, roughly 5% above Bitmine's $2,206 average entry.

Bitcoin Breaks Daily Downtrend Line as Volume Picks Up

This daily BTCUSD chart shows Bitcoin pushing above a long descending trendline that had capped price since late 2025. SuperBro says the breakout looks decisive because it comes with stronger volume, and he notes that in 2022 a similar break did not arrive until October.

The chart supports that view. Bitcoin spent months trading under a clear linear downtrend, with lower highs forming along the white resistance line. Now price has moved through that trendline near the $72,000 to $74,000 area. At the same time, volume has increased, which gives the breakout more weight than a quiet move above resistance.

That matters because trendline breaks on rising volume often signal a shift in market control. Sellers had defended this slope for months, but the latest candles show buyers pushing through it. Even so, one breakout candle does not guarantee a full trend reversal. Traders usually wait to see whether price can hold above the broken line and build continuation.

The 2022 comparison adds context. Back then, Bitcoin stayed under its broader downtrend for much longer before finally breaking out later in the year. Here, the suggestion is that $BTC may be showing relative strength earlier in the cycle. If price holds above the trendline, the breakout could mark the start of a broader recovery phase. If it falls back below, the move may turn into a false breakout instead.
