The crypto world lit up this week after a researcher reportedly cracked a 15-bit ECC key using a quantum computer and earned 1 BTC. At first glance, it sounds like a major step toward breaking Bitcoin encryption.
But when you dig deeper, the story looks a lot less dramatic.
What actually happened?
Researcher Giancarlo Lelli used a cloud-based quantum machine and a modified version of Shor’s algorithm to derive a 15-bit key. Project Eleven highlighted this as huge progress—jumping from 6-bit to 15-bit keys in just seven months (a 512× increase).
That sounds impressive… until you put it into context.
A 15-bit key is extremely small. Bitcoin doesn’t use anything close to that—it relies on 256-bit cryptography, which is astronomically more complex.
Why experts aren’t impressed
Adam Back, a longtime Bitcoin cryptographer, quickly dismissed the claim.
His take?
This wasn’t a true quantum breakthrough—it didn’t solve the core cryptographic challenge (the discrete logarithm problem). Instead, it behaved more like:
Smart guessing
Brute-force search in a tiny keyspace
With quantum hardware adding little real value
Former Bitcoin Core developer Jonas Schnelli backed this up with numbers:
Total possibilities: ~32,497
Attempts made: ~20,000
Success probability: ~50%
In other words, this was closer to flipping a coin than cracking modern encryption.
So… is Bitcoin at risk?
Right now, no—at least not from this kind of experiment.
Here’s why:
Bitcoin’s 256-bit keys are exponentially harder to break
Current quantum computers are nowhere near the required scale
Real-world quantum threats would likely target banks or state systems first
Even Adam Back remains confident: quantum computing, if it becomes dangerous, won’t start with Bitcoin.

Atkins has outlined a five-category crypto asset taxonomy under Project Crypto, four of which are classified as non-securities.

The SEC’s ACT strategy marks a formal departure from more than a decade of regulation by enforcement in the digital assets space.

No sitting Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chair has previously appeared at the annual Bitcoin conference, which is set to draw more than 40,000 participants this year to the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. Atkins’ decision to attend potentially signals the degree to which bitcoin has moved from the regulatory periphery to the center of U.S. financial policy.The backdrop is a series of regulatory actions that represent the most substantive shift in U.S. crypto policy in over a decade. In April, the SEC published a digital asset taxonomy distinguishing five categories of crypto assets, with four of the five falling outside the definition of securities under federal law. The agency has also proposed an innovation exemption giving market participants a defined, compliant pathway to begin facilitating tokenized securities trading onchain.Speaking at The Economic Club of Washington on April 21, Atkins stated the agency “will not stand idly by and watch innovations develop overseas while our capital markets remain stagnant,” framing the regulatory reset explicitly as a matter of competitive necessity for the U.S.The SEC’s overarching framework, referred to as the ACT strategy, stands for Advance, Clarify, and Transform. Under Atkins, the agency launched Project Crypto, a Commission-wide initiative to modernize securities rules and provide clear guidance on token issuance, custody standards, and trading oversight.
