Altcoin rotation or cycle? Here’s why USDT dominance may hold the answer

The development of a sustained cycle depends on a few key factors.

The market is currently exhibiting a textbook rotation phase.

On the technical side, Bitcoin dominance (BTC.D) has logged four straight days of downside pressure after its early May breakout to 61.2%. At the same time, the Altcoin Season Index has jumped by more than 10 points in less than 24 hours, reinforcing a classic BTC-to-altcoin rotation setup.

Historically, however, altcoin rallies rarely sustain momentum unless Ethereum [ETH], the largest altcoin, starts gaining strength against Bitcoin [BTC], allowing deeper capital to flow across the broader altcoin market.
As the chart below shows, the ETH/BTC ratio has rebounded around 0.7% after four consecutive weeks of decline. This could be an early sign that rotation might be expanding beyond Bitcoin. 
In short, several signals may be lining up for the market to start speculating on an altcoin rally.

That said, momentum remains the key variable. During the previous February-April cycle, the ETH/BTC ratio jumped by nearly 15%, pushing the Altcoin Season Index up more than 40% before topping near 55. This aligned with the BTC.D running into resistance around the 60%-level, creating a similar rotation narrative.

And yet, despite the improving structure, the setup never evolved into a full-blown altcoin cycle. The Altcoin Season Index failed to break above the 75-threshold typically required to confirm broad, market-wide altcoin expansion.

This raises the key question – Is the market simply entering another short-lived rotation phase, or is this setup fundamentally different?

Manhattan federal judge has cleared the way for Aave’s recovery effort to move forward after last month’s North Korea-linked rsETH exploit, allowing $71 million in frozen ether to be transferred out of Arbitrum while preserving North Korean terrorism victims’ legal claim on the funds.

In a two-page order published late Friday U.S. time, Judge Margaret Garnett modified a restraining notice previously served on Arbitrum DAO to allow an onchain governance vote transferring the immobilized ETH to a wallet controlled by Aave LLC.

The order also shields participants from liability under the notice, stating that anyone who initiates, votes on or participates in the transfer would not violate the freeze.

Judge Garnett's ruling follows an earlier off-chain Snapshot temperature check in which Arbitrum delegates overwhelmingly signaled support for returning the frozen ETH as part of Aave’s broader recovery plan. Any actual transfer, however, still requires a separate binding onchain governance vote.

Trump-Backed American Bitcoin Posts $82M Loss Despite Record BTC Mining Output

Despite the headline loss, the company emphasized that it continued accumulating Bitcoin rather than selling into weakness.
American Bitcoin (ABTC), the Trump family-backed BTC company, released its Q1 2026 financial results earlier in the week, and they showed a nearly $82 million net loss for the period.

This was despite the firm mining a record 817 BTC.

Per documents it filed with the SEC, apart from the 817 BTC it mined, American Bitcoin also bought another 803 BTC, which took its strategic reserve to 7,021 BTC by March 31.

However, at the time of writing, the stash had grown to about 7,300 BTC after the firm purchased an additional 300 units, which saw it climb the ranks of publicly traded companies holding Bitcoin to number 16.

Mining revenues declined to $62.1 million from $78.3 million, due to lower prices per Bitcoin mined of $76,000 compared to the previous quarter’s about $100,000. Still, the company posted a gross margin over 50% and cut its cost to mine by 23% to $36,200 per Bitcoin, down from $46,900 or so in Q4 2025.

Satoshis per share, the firm’s preferred measure of value creation, rose by about 20% quarter-over-quarter to about 663.

“Strip out the non-cash mark-to-market adjustment on our Bitcoin required by FASB, and the underlying business was profitable, and we did not sell a single coin,” CEO Mike Ho said in the earnings release.

President Matthew Prusak framed the cost improvement as the key operational story, saying:

“We produced Bitcoin at 52% gross margin despite a 22% decline in Bitcoin price, reflecting meaningful cost improvements that partially offset the price headwind. Every share of American Bitcoin owns more Bitcoin today than it did three months ago.”

Vladimir Putin told the world on May 9, 2026, that he believes the war in Ukraine is winding down. The statement came during Russia’s annual Victory Day parade in Moscow, an event that this year looked noticeably smaller than its predecessors.

“I think that the matter is coming to an end,” Putin said, referring to a conflict that has now ground on for more than four years.

Victory Day marks the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany, a date that carries enormous symbolic weight in Russia. This year marked the 81st anniversary of that moment. The parade honors the roughly 27 million Soviet casualties of the Second World War.

This year’s version was notably restrained. The celebration was significantly scaled back, though the precise reasons weren’t spelled out in Putin’s remarks.

US President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire set to begin on May 9, the same day as the parade. The ceasefire included a plan for prisoner exchanges, with 1,000 personnel from each side slated to be returned.

Trump described the ceasefire as potentially the “beginning of the end” of the conflict.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. A three-day ceasefire is not a peace deal.

The prisoner exchange component, 1,000 personnel from each side, is meaningful on a human level. Families get answers. Soldiers come home.

Putin’s choice of venue for the announcement is worth noting. Victory Day is the country’s most important military holiday. Declaring that a current conflict is ending on the same day you celebrate winning history’s most devastating war is a deliberate narrative choice.

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy, posted an updated Bitcoin Tracker on X and signaled that additional accumulation data may be disclosed next week, renewing attention on the company’s ongoing Bitcoin purchasing strategy.

Saylor’s post on X featured the updated tracker, a visual tool he has repeatedly used to telegraph upcoming Bitcoin purchases. The so-called “orange dots” on the tracker have historically preceded formal acquisition announcements from Strategy.

Bitcoin.com noted that Saylor’s tracker posts have consistently preceded buy confirmations, making each new update a closely watched signal among Bitcoin investors tracking major Bitcoin price levels and institutional moves.

The tracker update arrives shortly after a string of large acquisitions by Strategy. On June 16, 2025, the company announced it had acquired 10,100 BTC, bringing its total holdings to 592,100 BTC.

Ripple published an insight on May 7 detailing how its $25 million education commitment reached classrooms across the U.S. during the first year after the original pledge. Ripple said most of the original funding was delivered in RLUSD, Ripple’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, supporting DonorsChoose and Teach For America programs tied to classroom materials, teacher stipends, tutoring, and financial literacy resources.

The update focused on results from Ripple’s earlier Teacher Appreciation Week commitment rather than a new funding announcement. DonorsChoose received $15 million, helping fund 48,108 classroom projects across all 50 states. Teachers requested books, science kits, technology, and supplies directly through the platform. Ripple said 86% of funded projects served schools where more than half of the students come from low-income households. U.S.-based employees also directed $25,700 to 378 projects at 336 schools. The crypto firm stated:

The majority of the $25 million was delivered in RLUSD, Ripple’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, making this one of the largest stablecoin grants to nonprofits in history, and a practical demonstration that crypto-native philanthropy can operate at real scale.”Recognition followed the classroom funding. The DonorsChoose partnership won the Community Voice Award and a Bronze award for Best Education Initiative at the Anthem Awards. It was also nominated for Best Education Initiative at the Halo Awards, extending visibility for Ripple’s stablecoin-backed education grant beyond the digital
