Diplomacy between Washington and Tehran just hit a wall, and markets are feeling every brick. US stock futures tumbled after President Trump rejected Iran’s counter-proposal to his deal over the Strait of Hormuz, reigniting fears of a broader military confrontation and rattling investors across asset classes.

Dow futures fell by more than 450 points, while oil prices spiked to $90 per barrel on concerns about supply disruptions through one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures also posted marginal declines during overnight trading sessions as the situation deteriorated.

The timeline here matters. On April 9, during an earlier phase of negotiations, Iran floated the idea of accepting Bitcoin for oil tanker transit through the Strait of Hormuz. That suggestion, however unconventional, initially gave US stock futures a brief boost.

By April 12, negotiations between the two countries collapsed entirely, and Bitcoin along with other digital assets began sliding. The correlation between traditional market stress and crypto selling pressure was on full display.

Then came the latest blow. Trump’s outright rejection of Iran’s response to his proposal poured accelerant on an already smoldering situation. He threatened to escalate military actions against Iran, a move that pushed futures further into the red and sent crude oil soaring as traders priced in the possibility of supply chain chaos in the Persian Gulf.

Polymarket odds of US military action against Iran fluctuated but remained below 50%, suggesting prediction markets still see diplomacy, or at least restraint, as the base case.

ETH-BTC Pair Continues to Fall: Analyst Warns of 40 Percent Risk




In the cryptocurrency market, Ethereum’s weak performance against Bitcoin continues to attract attention.

Analysts note that the $ETH/$BTC pair has fallen by more than 35% in the past year, and warn that if the current downtrend continues, the pair could experience a further loss of up to 40%.

According to analyst Yashu Gola, the $ETH/$BTC chart is recreating the bearish pattern of 2024-2025. Technically, the pair is being pressured below the downtrend line that has been in place since 2022, and although this level has been tested several times, it has not been permanently breached. It was noted that one of these failed breakout attempts resulted in a sharp drop of approximately 70% in the pair.

Agentic commerce will run on crypto rails, PayPal and Google reps tell Consensus Miami


IAMI BEACH, Fla. — Senior figures from Google Cloud and PayPal told CoinDesk's Consensus Miami conference on Thursday that the next wave of internet commerce will run on crypto rails because AI agents structurally cannot use traditional financial accounts.


Richard Widmann, global head of Web3 strategy at Google Cloud, said the existing internet user experience does not extend to autonomous agents.

"An agent cannot get a bank account. It's not hard, it just is impossible," he said, citing technological and regulatory barriers. Crypto, by contrast, is "a fantastic machine readable interface for payments," Widmann said.

To address the gap, Google has launched the Agentic Payments Protocol (AP2), an open protocol that has been donated to the FIDO Foundation and has more than 120 partners including PayPal, Widmann said. He compared the move to the x402 internet-native payment standard given to the Linux Foundation.

"Open dialogues and open standards are really the foundation you need to build on," Widmann said.

May Zabaneh, senior vice president and general manager of crypto at PayPal, said the company is treating agents as the next channel after PayPal's evolution from offline to online to mobile commerce. PYUSD, the company's stablecoin, is "a very natural programmable layer for payments," she said, particularly as commerce trends toward globalization, AI-native experiences and tokenized assets.

Zabaneh cited a recent PayPal survey which found that 95% of merchants now see AI agent traffic on their sites, but only 20% have machine-readable catalogs. "Merchants need to be ready for this next era," she said. The shift, she added, mirrors the move from offline to online stores; merchants need to expose their products in agent-readable formats.

Bitcoin ($BTC) may head into next week’s US inflation report with less support than it had during the last two CPI releases, raising the risk of a pullback toward $70,000.

It expects monthly CPI at 0.45%, down from 0.9%, while core CPI is projected at 2.56% year over year and 0.21% month over month, compared with 2.6% and 0.2% previously. The official April CPI report is due on May 12.

That keeps the inflation picture mixed. Headline CPI is expected to reaccelerate, even if the monthly pace slows and core inflation stays mostly stable.

For risk assets, that is not an ideal setup. A firmer annual CPI reading can still reinforce the view that the Fed has little room to cut rates quickly, which tends to pressure speculative trades such as Bitcoin.

Nonetheless, Bitcoin has avoided deeper declines despite the recent hot CPI prints.

For instance, $BTC price rallied by over 15% after the March CPI report showed headline inflation rising to 3.3% from 2.4% in February.

One reason is that institutional buyers absorbed more than 500% of the newly mined Bitcoin supply, with Strategy accounting for a large share of that buying.

That support looks weaker now. Strategy has paused its $BTC purchases, while its STRC preferred stock continues to trade below its $100 par value.

Crude oil surged roughly 4% after President Trump dismissed Iran’s counterproposal to end hostilities, ratcheting up a standoff over the world’s most important oil chokepoint. Brent June futures climbed to $110.42 per barrel, touching a session high of $111.68, while West Texas Intermediate punched through to $113.07 per barrel during trading.

What happened, and why it matters right now
Iran responded to US proposals with a 10-clause counterproposal that included two non-starters for the Trump administration: a permanent cessation of hostilities and relief from sanctions. Trump rejected it outright.

The president then set a 20:00 ET Tuesday deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Iran “could be taken out” imminently.

The Strait of Hormuz is responsible for roughly 20% of global oil supply, with approximately 21 million barrels of oil transported through it each day. Iran’s position is that it won’t reopen the strait or agree to rapid negotiations without permanent peace guarantees and the lifting of economic sanctions.

The diplomatic breakdown in context
The 10-clause Iranian response signals that Tehran views this as a moment to extract maximum concessions, not a moment to capitulate. Demanding permanent peace and sanctions relief before even beginning rapid negotiations is, diplomatically speaking, asking the other side to pay the full bill before looking at the menu.

What this means for investors
Higher crude prices feed directly into energy sector revenues, transportation costs, and ultimately consumer prices. Experts predict any closure of the strait could lead to oil prices soaring by 20-50%, further stressing global energy markets.

Data from DefiLlama shows Hyperliquid led the group, distributing $50.95 million in full to its users. Pump.fun followed with $22.09 million in payouts from $38.81 million in revenue.

On the other hand, EdgeX reported $23.26 million in protocol revenue, up from $8.26 million, suggesting a reserve or another funding source to pay the distributions. The figures mark a growing shift in the crypto sector.

Why are DeFi investors focusing on revenue now?

DeFi products competed with each other for years on measures such as TVL, daily users, and transaction throughput. But as traders turn away from long-term promises to sustainable business models, market sentiment is shifting.

Robbie Klages recently summarized the new mood in the market by saying that investors no longer care if a blockchain processes “10x the TPS” if it can’t earn. His remarks are part of a broader view that DeFi initiatives are now being seen more as businesses than as experimental crypto networks.

A more difficult market has also driven investors to places where they can visibly see income. It also means that, with competition on the rise and not wanting to be a speculator, protocols without firm revenue models are at risk of being looked at as ventures with no clear-cut success path.
