South Korea sees $60 billion crypto outflows to overseas platforms and private wallets in H2 2025

South Korea’s financial regulator said roughly $60 billion worth of crypto moved out of local exchanges to overseas platforms and private wallets in the second half of 2025.

The regulator said the outflows may be linked to increased arbitrage activity amid market volatility.
South Korean crypto exchanges saw roughly $60 billion in cryptocurrency outflow to overseas platforms and private wallets in the second half of 2025, according to the latest findings from the country's top financial regulator.

In a report released Wednesday, the Financial Services Commission said total outflows reached 90 trillion won ($60 billion) during the period, up 14% from 78.9 trillion won ($52.5 billion) in the first half of the year.

"It is presumed that virtual assets are being transferred abroad for arbitrage and other similar activities," the report said.

The report also showed that while user numbers and deposits on local exchanges increased during the period, overall profitability declined.

As of the end of last year, the number of crypto exchange accounts reached 11.1 million, up 3% from June 2025. Deposits rose more sharply, climbing 31% to 8.1 trillion won ($5.4 billion).

This growth did not translate into higher profits. The country's 18 operating exchanges reported 380.7 billion won ($253.4 million) in operating profit in the second half, down 38% from 617.8 billion won ($411.2 million) in the first half.

The FSC estimated South Korea's total crypto market capitalization at 87.2 trillion won (about $58 billion) at the end of 2025, down 8% from the first half of the year. Average daily transaction volume during the period was 5.4 trillion won ($3.6 billion), a 15% decline from the first half.

Australian Pension Fund Hostplus Plots Crypto Play, Here’s What It Would Actually Mean For Bitcoin
An Australian pension fund is exploring offering Bitcoin and other digital assets to its members as investment options
In what Bloomberg fittingly calls a “rare move”, Hostplus, a A$150 billion+ ($105 billion) Australian pension fund, is considering this cryptocurrency venture due to the high demand from some members, said Chief Investment Officer Sam Sicilia in an interview:
There’s certainly a demand from some of our members who write in and say ‘why can’t I have access to cryptocurrency?’”

The fund is still in design phase, Sicilia clarified, and there are yet several capital matters to resolve, especially around safeguarding consumers. Besides, its implementation would depend entirely on regulatory approval. The CIO, however, is not worried about the wait and is ready to give regulators room the time they need:

“We’d love to get regulatory tick off, even if it means waiting another six months. We are long-term investors. Six months doesn’t really move the dial for us”

Were it to become a reality, the plan could come to fruition as soon as next financial year. Sicilia explained that the fund would add bitcoin and the other digital assets to its Choiceplus investment option, which lets members manage their own retirement portfolios. At present, only about 1% of the fund’s total assets sit in Choiceplus.

Hostplus first looked at cryptocurrencies a decade ago, and since then both Bitcoin and the broader crypto scene have change and evolved immensely. But the other digital assets the fund plans to incorporate are not just in the crypto asset class: music rights are included in those other digital assets, the Hostplus’ CIO added:

Morgan Stanley is Pushing Bitcoin and Crypto, But Says Wall Street Isn’t Chasing FOMO
Morgan Stanley is accelerating its bitcoin and crypto strategy, but the bank’s digital asset head says it’s the result of years of preparation, not a sudden rush to catch up.

Speaking at the Digital Asset Summit on Tuesday, Amy Oldenburg emphasized that Wall Street’s move into digital assets reflects a long-term effort to modernize financial infrastructure. “We’ve been on a journey around the entire modernization of financial infrastructure for years,” she said, rejecting the idea that banks are acting out of fear of missing out.

Morgan Stanley has expanded beyond indirect crypto exposure, such as wealthy client bitcoin funds, to offer spot ETFs on its E*Trade platform and has filed to launch its own bitcoin ETF. 

Looking ahead, the bank plans to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system in the second half of 2026.

Oldenburg noted the challenges remain significant. Upgrading legacy systems, coordinating across a global network, and integrating with complex banking infrastructure all slow progress. “We can’t just modernize on our own,” she said.

Even amid volatile token prices, institutional activity is quietly growing. Stablecoins and faster settlement tools are gaining traction, signaling that Wall Street’s deeper crypto integration is underway — gradually, but steadily.

“This is a natural progression,” Oldenburg said at Strategy World. “We can’t just primarily rent the technology to do this. People expect Morgan Stanley – they trust our brand – to be no fail”

Without favorable crypto reform and lower interest rates, Bitcoin's value could plummet even further this year.

Bitcoin (BTC+2.79%) has often been touted as a "digital gold" and safe-haven type of investment that you can hang on to amid uncertainty in the markets. But that hasn't been the case this year. With multiple wars going on and concerns about inflation growing, investors haven't exactly been loading up on Bitcoin. Instead, the leading cryptocurrency has fallen by close to 20% thus far.

It's not proving to be much of a safe-haven asset these days. And there are potential headwinds that could result in the leading cryptocurrency dropping even further in value this year.
Bitcoin is down around 44% from the highs it reached last year, but that doesn't mean that it may end up bouncing back soon. Investors have recently become concerned about the prospects for crypto reform this year, with new question marks about the Clarity Act, which seeks to create a framework for digital assets, to determine what is and isn't a security. The bill, however, contains a provision that prohibits yields on stablecoins, effectively making them less attractive to investors. That could be a major stumbling block. And if the bill doesn't pass, that may weigh on Bitcoin's valuation.

Furthermore, there's the uncertainty about rate cuts, which may pose further risk for Bitcoin. Cryptocurrencies are highly speculative assets that tend to perform well when interest rates are low and investor risk appetite is high. But with inflation being a concern amid rising oil prices, there may be only one rate cut this year, and even that is by no means a sure thing.
