Winklevoss Capital moves $43 million in bitcoin to custody after hitting lowest balance since 2012


Some 572 bitcoin worth $42.77 million moved from a Gemini hot wallet into wallets owned by Winklevoss Capital and custody wallets in the past 24 hours, according to Arkham Intelligence data, the first significant transfers into the fund's addresses in over a month.

The transfers came in two batches. One of 372 $BTC and one of 200 $BTC about 11 hours later. Both moved from addresses tagged by Arkham as belonging to the crypto exchange to addresses tagged as Winklevoss Capital and Gemini Custody.

Winklevoss Capital now holds 9,328 $BTC worth $689 million across 128 tracked addresses, up from about 8,800 $BTC after a $128.5 million deposit into Gemini roughly a month ago that brought holdings to their lowest level since 2012.

It also holds 70,588 ETH worth $163.7 million, bringing its total tracked portfolio to approximately $853 million, the Arkham data show.

The onchain data shows the direction of movement, not the intent. The transfers could reflect new purchases, internal rebalancing between Gemini's exchange and custody infrastructure, or a partial reversal of last month's deposit.

Gemini Space Station (GEMI), founded by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, has faced mounting financial pressure this year.

Bloomberg reported last week that the company has lost more than half its market value in 2026, cut 30% of its workforce and exited markets including the U.K., EU, and Australia.

The Winklevoss brothers have roughly $330 million in outstanding bitcoin-denominated loans to the company, and one idea being discussed internally involves converting that debt into equity, Bloomberg said.

Global crypto markets witnessed a series of significant developments today. Ripple unveiled a bond tokenization pilot in South Korea, while the XRP Ledger announced a privacy-focused integration with Boundless. At the same time, U.S.-listed Bitcoin ETFs attracted strong inflows, 
and Tether launched a new self-custodial wallet.
To begin with, Ripple announced a partnership with Kyobo Life Insurance to pilot blockchain-based settlement for government bonds within South Korea’s financial system.

As part of the initiative, Ripple will deploy its custody platform, Ripple Custody, to handle the issuance, settlement, and storage of tokenized bonds.

The move targets longstanding inefficiencies in traditional bond markets, where settlements typically involve multiple intermediaries and can take up to two days. By contrast, blockchain-based processes enable near real-time execution.

If successful, the pilot could reduce counterparty risk and improve capital efficiency. Ripple also indicated that the project may expand into broader tokenized treasury operations across South Korea’s financial ecosystem.

Alongside its bond initiative, Ripple’s ecosystem is progressing on the technological side. In a separate announcement, the XRP Ledger revealed an integration with Boundless to enhance transaction privacy.

The upgrade leverages zero-knowledge technology tailored for institutional use, allowing sensitive transaction details to remain hidden while still meeting regulatory requirements.

According to Boundless CEO Shiv Shankar, the system conceals key information such as transaction size and counterparties, while enabling regulators to access necessary data through selective disclosure.

Tax season is now more connected to Bitcoin’s retail demand.

Bitcoin has spent the first half of April trading in the low $70,000s, with recent moves through the $71,000 to $75,000 zone keeping the asset close enough to its highs for retail attention to return quickly.

But there’s a more important change happening beneath the surface.

A lot of household cash is moving through the U.S. financial system as today's April 15 tax deadline arrives. This year, tax season is also more complicated for people who own crypto.

This overlap creates a more interesting situation than the usual talk about ETFs or the broader economy.

Recent IRS statistics show just how big the refund channel is now.

By April 3, the IRS had sent out 69.8 million refunds, up 3.1% from last year. The total amount refunded was $241.7 billion, a 14.5% increase, and the average refund rose 11.1% to $3,462.

Direct deposit refunds stood out even more.

The IRS reported 70.3 million direct deposit refunds, totaling $242.9 billion. The average direct deposit refund was $3,454.

That’s real money landing in household accounts at a time when Bitcoin is liquid, easy to access, and familiar enough that even a small investment feels possible for people who follow the market.

This link gets even stronger as the tax deadline approaches.

A recent MarketWatch report said the average refund is now about $351 higher than last year. The IRS has also received over a million fewer returns compared to this time last year.

The same report pointed to late-arriving forms and new crypto reporting rules as reasons for the slower pace of filings.

Together, these factors are changing how people talk about Bitcoin.

Goldman Sachs has filed for a Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, reflecting a broader Wall Street shift toward structured Bitcoin income products.

Goldman Sachs has filed to launch a Bitcoin Premium Income ETF, signaling a deeper push by the Wall Street bank into crypto-linked investment products that blend Bitcoin exposure with an options-based income strategy. 

The move follows similar “premium income” designs from issuers such as BlackRock, Morgan Stanley and Grayscale that seek to turn BTC’s volatility into a steady yield stream for investors.

A Bitcoin Premium Income ETF typically holds spot BTC exposure, often through shares of an existing spot Bitcoin ETF, and then sells call options on that position to generate option premium income. 

This “covered‑call” structure collects cash from option buyers and distributes that cash as income, in exchange for giving up part of BTC’s upside above a set strike price.

In practice, the fund benefits when BTC trades sideways or rises only modestly, because it keeps the option premiums while price moves stay inside the range of the sold calls. 

When BTC rallies sharply, the ETF’s gains are capped beyond the strike, since it has already agreed to sell that upside to option buyers. During sell‑offs, the fund still absorbs most of the downside, with the collected premiums providing only partial cushioning.

Bitcoin breakout odds rise as negative funding streak mirrors past bottoming regimes, K33 says

Persistent negative funding alongside growing open interest and rising bitcoin prices is increasing the likelihood of a short squeeze, according to K33.

The bitcoin 30-day average funding rate has been negative for 46 consecutive days, matching the duration of the 2022 bear market bottom, Head of Research Vetle Lunde noted.

While defensive positioning has become a recurring theme in the bitcoin ￼BTC-0.17%￼

 market, continued negative funding paired with growing open interest and rising prices point to elevated aggression from bears, according to research and brokerage firm K33, increasing the likelihood of a short squeeze ahead.

The 30-day average bitcoin derivatives funding rate has now been negative for 46 consecutive days, K33 Head of Research Vetle Lunde noted in a new report, matching the duration of the negative funding regime seen around the late 2022 bear market bottom.

"With recent funding rate compression and the unusually persistent negative regime, we see increasing odds of higher highs and a breakout from BTC's 68-day consolidation," Lunde said.

Periods where notional open interest trends higher, bitcoin prices rise, and daily, seven-day, and 30-day average funding rates remain negative have persistently appeared near consolidation bottoms, Lunde noted.

"Current crypto-native positioning aligns with such conditions, which is why we have emphasized funding rate regimes in our reports over the past month and why we maintain our bullish BTC outlook," he said.

Only March to May 2020 (63 days) and June to August 2021 (49 days) have presented longer continuous durations of negative 30-day funding rates, according to K33's analysis.
