The rapid construction of artificial intelligence data centers has reignited the debate about energy consumption, with critics arguing that large-scale computing operations strain the grid and drive up electricity prices. Bitcoin mining is also increasingly linked to concerns about high-density computing infrastructure.


In a recent research report, Paradigm refutes this claim, arguing that Bitcoin mining is frequently misunderstood in public energy debates. The company defines mining as an activity of the electricity market that reacts to price signals and grid conditions, rather than being a static energy consumer.


 Justin Slaughter and co-author Veronica Irwin challenge several assumptions commonly used in energy modeling. Some analyses measure Bitcoin's energy consumption per transaction, but in reality, mining energy consumption is related to network security and competition among miners, not transaction volume.
