The upgrade aims to secure more than $700 million in wrapped Bitcoin assets tied to SolvBTC and xSolvBTC, according to Solv. The move means that Chainlink CCIP will become the protocol’s default cross-chain communication layer on all supported networks.

Built by Solv Protocol, SolvBTC gives Bitcoin holders access to DeFi opportunities without giving up direct $BTC exposure. The protocol also supports cross-chain interoperability and institutional-style Bitcoin yield products through its BTCFi infrastructure.

Despite the strong operational performance, the company’s GAAP results painted a sharply different picture.

Block’s Bitcoin holdings resulted in a $173 million fair value loss in Q1 2026, nearly double the $93 million remeasurement loss recorded on the same position a year earlier, as the company’s mark-to-market accounting obligations translated Bitcoin price movements directly into reported earnings.

That loss, combined with $852 million in restructuring and other charges tied to the February workforce reduction that cut headcount from more than 10,000 employees to just under 6,000, pushed Block to a $172 million operating loss and a $309 million net loss for the quarter under standard accounting rules.

At the time of writing, Block Inc. held roughly 9,032 Bitcoin valued at approximately $724.4 million, compared to its 8,692 BTC holdings worth $1.08 billion as of the 6th of October, 2025.

The development follows an announcement by Square expanding its services to allow small businesses in the U.S. to accept Bitcoin payments for goods and services.

The losses were not limited to Block Inc. alone. Coinbase also reported weaker quarterly results, with the leading U.S.-based crypto exchange posting revenue of $1.41 billion, down 30.5% year over year, while continuing cost-cutting measures after reducing its workforce earlier this year.

Quantum Blockchain resumes Bitcoin mining research programme

Quantum Blockchain Technologies plc (AIM: QBT) has resumed its quantum computing research programme focused on Bitcoin mining, restarting work that was paused at the end of 2023 due to limitations in available quantum hardware.

The company said the same research team from the University of Milan that worked on the original project will continue leading the initiative, allowing development to build directly on previous progress.

QBT’s research centres on the application of quantum computing to cryptographic hashing and proof-of-work optimisation, with the company highlighting its proprietary quantum implementation of the SHA-256 algorithm as a key strategic asset.

The company plans to use this internal quantum SHA-256 capability within its own benchmarking framework to assess the performance of emerging quantum computing platforms as the technology evolves.

QBT said the programme will focus on monitoring advances in quantum computing architectures, analysing new quantum algorithms relevant to hashing and optimisation, and benchmarking real-world performance across different systems.

While acknowledging that current quantum computers are still not capable of delivering practical advantages in Bitcoin mining, the company believes rapid advances in the sector could eventually create commercially viable opportunities.

Chief executive Francesco Gardin said the company believes early investment and proprietary development in quantum computing could provide a significant long-term competitive advantage within blockchain technology and mining applications.
