Polkadot (DOT) seeks to remove its two largest barriers to staking participation through a new on-chain change. 

Referendum 1890 requires validators to lock at least 10,000 DOT of their own funds as self-stake.

Polkadot Tightens Validator Requirements 

According to the team, the change is a mandatory prerequisite for the next phase of Polkadot’s staking redesign. OpenGov currently shows 100% Aye support, with enactment targeted for May 31.

“Non-compliant validators will face significant risk of chilling,” the post reads.

Once enacted, nominators become unslashable, and the unbonding period drops from 28 days to 24-48 hours. By mid-June, the network will add rewards for validators in unlocked DOT tied to their self-stake. 

After the issuance buffer starts funding stablecoin payouts, these DOT rewards will be subject to a one-year vesting period. Stablecoins will handle operational expenses. As a result, the commission model will be phased out, as it no longer serves a purpose. 

Polkadot said the reasoning behind the change is “simple.” Validators directly shoulder slashing risk through substantial self-bond exposure. At the same time, nominators can continue earning staking rewards without risking their principal to slashing.

“If enacted, Polkadot staking would remove its two largest barriers to participation: Lower risk. Faster exits,” the team added.

The redesign is one of the most significant rewires of Polkadot’s staking economics, but the heavy lifting is still ahead. Validators have to actually post the 10,000 DOT before May 31 to avoid being chilled.

A new report from crypto market maker Keyrock reveals that autonomous AI agents have settled over $73 million through 176 million on-chain transactions over the past year, with a staggering 98.6% of those payments conducted in the USDC stablecoin. The data, covering May 2025 through April 2026, paints a clear picture of a rapidly emerging machine-to-machine micro-payment economy.

The Rise of Machine-Centric Micro-Payments

According to Keyrock’s findings, the average payment per transaction by these AI agents ranged between $0.31 and $0.48. This low-value, high-volume activity suggests that automated systems are increasingly handling routine, small-scale financial tasks—such as paying for API calls, data access, or cloud compute resources—without human intervention. The reliance on USDC, a regulated stablecoin, underscores the need for a stable, low-cost settlement layer for these autonomous operations.

Infrastructure and Regulatory Hurdles

While stablecoins like USDC are becoming essential infrastructure for this machine economy, the report highlights significant concerns. The dependence on the regulatory status and financial stability of the stablecoin issuers themselves remains a vulnerability. Furthermore, Keyrock noted that comprehensive regulatory frameworks from national authorities for machine-led transactions are still underdeveloped. This regulatory gap could pose risks for widespread adoption and long-term reliability of automated payment systems.

With BTC’s price experiencing a decline, the supply in profit is beginning to drop, creating a highly negative environment for investors.

Percentage Of Bitcoin Supply In Profit Continues To Shrink
The Bitcoin price is now struggling within the $77,000 threshold following a recent pullback, which is now hindering its market dynamics. One of the outcomes includes the percentage of BTC supply currently held in profit falling below key levels seen during previous bull market phases.

In his analysis shared on the X platform, Darkfost, a market decoder and verified CryptoQuant author, highlighted that the Bitcoin supply being held in profit has fallen to around 61%, indicating the growing impact of ongoing market volatility. A growing number of investors are either holding unrealized losses or are getting closer to their cost basis after BTC’s downside action.

While the level may appear relatively high after first glance, the expert stated that it remains fairly low in reality. In the past, the share of supply held in profit has often stayed above 75% during bull market phases, indicating a crucial change in market dynamics. The decline in profitable supply reflects ongoing weakening confidence in the market as it moves into a phase of uncertainty.

Meanwhile, bear market periods have been linked to a significantly greater domination of losses, with about 45% of the supply being retained at a loss. When BTC dropped below the $60,000 price level, the market drew close to reaching a balance between profits and losses. During this period, only 51.1% of the BTC supply was left in profit.
