A predawn military strike near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on May 25 reportedly killed three people, in what Iranian state-affiliated media attributes to a joint US-Israeli operation. The fatalities have been identified as Abbas Eslami, Ghodrat Zarnegari, and Abdolreza Golzari.

Separate reports from Iranian outlet SNN indicate that four IRGC naval personnel were also killed during strikes on speedboats operating in the surrounding waters. Explosions were reportedly heard in nearby Bandar Abbas, accompanied by drone activity over the area.

Larak Island sits at the narrowest point of the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly one-fifth of global petroleum consumption passes through this waterway daily.

For Iran, Larak Island serves as a critical outpost for military operations and maritime surveillance, hosting military installations including bases and radar stations, as well as fast-attack craft. It gives Iranian forces visibility over virtually every tanker and warship transiting the strait.

The island has drawn increased strategic attention throughout 2026 as tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran have continued to intensify, with military analysts flagging it as a potential flashpoint in discussions surrounding US and Israeli operational strategies intended to assert control over transit routes.

The targeting of IRGC speedboats adds another dimension. These fast-moving vessels have long been a hallmark of Iran’s asymmetric naval strategy, designed to swarm and overwhelm larger warships.

Yields are rising everywhere, not just in the US
This isn’t an isolated American phenomenon. Yields across Germany, Japan, and other major markets now range from 3.5% to 6%, creating a synchronized global tightening.

The drivers include inflation risks tied to energy prices and geopolitical tensions, heavy government debt issuance across developed economies, and rising fiscal premiums as investors demand more compensation for holding sovereign debt.

Phillip Lee, Goldman’s Head of Real Money Rate Sales, pointed to inflation uncertainties stemming from oil prices, tariffs, and AI-driven economic shifts as reasons investors are now requiring higher real yields.

Markets have moved from pricing in Federal Reserve rate cuts to now expecting roughly 30 basis points of cumulative hikes through 2027.

Equities at record highs, risk appetite at the 99th percentile
Equity markets have pushed to record highs even as yields have surged. Goldman’s Chief Global Equity Strategist Peter Oppenheimer flagged the breakdown in correlation between rising bond yields and stock prices as a warning sign, noting that equity risk premiums have compressed significantly.

Crypto analyst Ted Pillows noted that the $BTC price closed above $75,000, and now the key zone to reclaim is between $77,500 and $78,000, with a rally towards the psychological $80,000 zone. He warned that if Bitcoin fails to hold above $78,000, it will likely sweep the $75,000 zone againMeanwhile, crypto analyst Max noted that many low-leverage long liquidations were wiped out on the $BTC price decline below $75,000. He stated that this now leaves only one decent cluster below, which will get swept if the price takes out the previous low at $74,200. The analyst acknowledged that a retest of the $80,000 range was still possible from a liquidity perspective, but that the current market structure favors another sweep lower. At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is trading at around $77,300, up in the last 24 hours, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

The proposal, part of ongoing negotiations with Iran, addresses an estimated 400 to 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity. That’s enough fissile material to fuel multiple nuclear weapons if processed further.

Lower energy costs feed directly into cooling headline inflation numbers, which in turn could give the Fed more room to maneuver on interest rates.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of global oil consumption, and any escalation in tensions around it tends to send crude spiking.
