US Judge Rules That AI-Generated Artworks Are Not Eligible for Copyright Protection

08/20 10:20

US District Judge Beryl Howell has upheld the US Copyright Office's stance that artworks created solely by artificial intelligence (AI) are not eligible for copyright protection. This ruling comes amidst concerns about the possibility of generative AI replacing human artists and writers. The decision was made in response to a legal dispute by Stephen Thaler, CEO of Imagination Engines, who argued that AI meeting authorship criteria should be recognized as an author. However, Judge Howell stressed the importance of humans as authors in copyright law and the significance of human creativity in intellectual property.
