Researchers at San Diego State University have developed an automated system called GiveawayScamHunter that detected over 95,000 scam lists created on Twitter between June 2022 and June 2023. These lists were created from 87,617 accounts and were used to scam users through free cryptocurrency giveaways. The researchers found that 44% of the spam accounts remained active at the time of their report, highlighting the need for preventative measures to protect users from fraudulent activity on social media platforms. The team reported their findings to Twitter in an effort to combat the dissemination of scams on the platform.
