Samsung eyes chip facility in Japan amid thaw in Seoul-Tokyo relations

05/19 20:40

Samsung Electronics is reportedly considering building a chip development facility in Yokohama, Japan, with an estimated cost of $220m. The move comes amid a thaw in Seoul-Tokyo relations and would see Samsung build a prototype chip production line at the site from 2025. While nothing has been confirmed by Samsung regarding such plans, Japanese media outlet Nikkei reported that the Korean tech giant was already in talks with the Japanese government on establishing a new R&D facility. If built, it is likely to receive over $90m in subsidies from the Japanese government's subsidy program to boost its domestic chip industry.
