Research by security firm Zellic has discovered a minor and harmless bug in WETH. Since SELFDESTRUCT/coinbase eth transfers are not considered, injecting ETH into the WETH contract via the SELFDESTRUCT (self-destruct) function increases the ETH balance in the contract, but does not mint any new Token, making the WETH The totalSupply function variable in the contract is out of sync, i.e. the total amount of WETH Token is less than or equal to the native ETH balance in WETH. WETH has now been involved in over 125 million transactions across the main ethereum network, with over 7% of ethereum transactions involving WETH; furthermore, of the 420 million ethereum transactions in the past year, 11.5% of them involved WETH.
