Nobody hacked anything. No smart contract failed, no private key leaked, no phishing link fired. On July 6, the treasury of BonkDAO, the community organization behind one of Solana’s flagship memecoins, transferred roughly $20 million worth of $BONK to a wallet controlled by an attacker, and every step of the transfer was a valid transaction executed exactly as the DAO’s own rules prescribed.

The attacker did not break the governance system. They bought it, for about $4.4 million, at an implied return of nearly five to one, in a vote where seven wallets participated and more than 18,000 members did not. The episode is the cleanest proof to date of an uncomfortable truth the industry has spent years politely ignoring: a treasury governed by token-weighted voting is worth exactly the cost of assembling a temporary majority, and for most DAOs, that cost is a fraction of the prize.

XRP Leads Crypto Retail Optimism as Social FOMO Hits Five-Week High

XRP has become the most bullish major cryptocurrency on social media, according to on-chain analytics platform Santiment.

Despite recent price weakness, retail traders are showing the highest level of fear of missing out (FOMO) in five weeks.

XRP Tops Social Sentiment Rankings

Santiment Intelligence reported that XRP recorded a positive-to-negative commentary ratio of 3.02-to-1 on Monday, the highest among the three largest cryptocurrencies it tracks.

Ethereum ranked second at 2.31-to-1, while Bitcoin remained comparatively neutral at 1.40-to-1.

The firm said market sentiment has shifted away from fear, but optimism is not evenly distributed across major assets. XRP has entered what Santiment described as a “major FOMO” zone, while Ethereum shows only mild FOMO.

Bullish Sentiment Rises Despite Price Weakness
The surge in bullish commentary comes even as XRP’s price and that of Ethereum have struggled to maintain recent gains. Santiment noted that Bitcoin and Ethereum started Monday’s session higher before giving back those gains. XRP also faced selling pressure despite the rise in positive social sentiment.

For context, XRP’s price reached $1.1180 three days ago but has since fallen to just above $1.05, raising the risk of dropping below $1. XRP is now down 5.56% over the past week and more than 6% over the past month.

The analytics platform warned that rising optimism during a price decline can increase short-term downside risks.

“Crypto typically moves opposite to what the crowd is loudly expecting,” Santiment said.

The firm added that excessive bullishness around XRP or Ethereum while prices are falling could delay a recovery or lead to additional selling pressure.

Despite negative factors such as the US-Iran geopolitical conflict and Strategy’s sell-off, Bitcoin, which had maintained the $62,000 support level, experienced a surge after US inflation data came in below expectations and approached $64,000However, this may not be a signal that the upward trend has reversed.
At this point, Wintermute analysts stated that Bitcoin has passed its worst period, but a trend reversal has not yet been confirmed.
In their latest weekly review, cryptocurrency market maker Wintermute analysts analyzed that despite negative factors such as the US-Iran geopolitical conflict and Strategy’s $BTC sales, Bitcoin held onto the $62,000 support line, but a full recovery has not yet been confirmed.Wintermute noted a significant development: an eight-week streak of outflows from spot $BTC ETFs has finally turned into inflows. However, analysts caution that a single week of inflows should not yet be considered the start of a new uptrend.

According to Wintermute, two preconditions were expected for a market recovery and bottom formation: “A stable market structure that prevents chain reactions of liquidations amid bad news, and an improvement in spot ETF flows.” Both of these have now been met.
The fact that Strategy’s $BTC sales had almost no effect on the market and that the $62,000 support level was maintained is also seen as a positive sign for a bottom formation.
Despite these criteria being met and the downtrend being broken, Wintermute argues that it’s necessary to wait before saying the market has entered a recovery phase.He stated that there are important variables to watch to determine if the recovery is continuing and if the trend is changing. Bitwise Sees a Bottom in Bitcoin’s Worst Vibes Yet: ‘Darkest Before the Dawn’ 

Bitcoin closed the second quarter of 2026 mired in its deepest and longest downturn since the last bear market, according to Bitwise Asset Management’s newly released Q3 2026 Crypto Market Review. 

Yet the $9 billion crypto asset manager frames the pain as a setup rather than a collapse, arguing the industry has never been sturdier beneath the surface.

Bitcoin fell 13.4% in Q2 and is down 32.9% for the year, dropping below $60,000 in June for the first time since 2024 and landing roughly 52% under its October peak of $126,080. That extends what Bitwise calls “crypto winter” to nine months and marks the third straight quarter of negative returns for the broader Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index, its longest losing streak since 2022. 

Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan does not sugarcoat it, writing that “the vibes in crypto are among the worst I’ve seen in my eight years in this industry.”

Even so, bitcoin held up far better than most of its peers. Its 32.9% year-to-date decline was the shallowest drawdown among major large-cap tokens, easily beating Ethereum’s 46.9% slide, Solana’s 40.6% and Cardano’s 56.5%. 

Bitcoin now commands a 64.2% share of the roughly $1.88 trillion total crypto market and carries a 77.4% weight inside the Bitwise 10 index, cementing its status as the sector’s relative safe haven even in a broad selloff.

Bitcoin ETF outflows hit a record
The quarter’s most jarring statistic came from the exchange-traded product complex that has anchored bitcoin’s institutional era. U.S. spot bitcoin ETPs bled $4.9 billion in Q2, their worst quarter since launching in January 2024, according to Bitwise. 

Assets under management still stand at $72.4 billion, with $53.4 billion in cumulative net flows since inception, but the reversal underscored how quickly professional sentiment can sour.
