Crypto Prices Today: Bitcoin Holds $64K as Ethereum Outperforms

Crypto is closing the week in cautious green after a whipsaw few days. A softer-than-expected inflation print early in the week pushed Bitcoin briefly above $65,000 and Ethereum over $1,900, before a sixth straight day of U.S. airstrikes against Iran pulled risk assets back down. As of now, the majors are holding modest weekly gains, but the market remains firmly below where it started 2026.

Here's what moved this week and what to watch next.

Where are crypto prices right now?

As of this weekend, here's the snapshot for the majors:

Bitcoin ($BTC): ~$64,300, up roughly 3.3% on the week but still down around 27% year-to-date

Ethereum ($ETH): ~$1,860, the standout performer of 2026 with a positive YTD near +40% while the rest of the majors sit in the red

$XRP: ~$1.14, the most muted weekly move among the majors, holding just above the $1 support level

Solana ($SOL): leading the majors on the week with gains near +5%, trying to reclaim its previous trading range

$BNB: ~$610, up over 1% on the day

The Debate Over BIP 110 in Bitcoin Is Intensifying: Michael Saylor Has Published a 110-Point Objection

Strategy founder Michael Saylor has published a comprehensive assessment of the BIP 110 proposal, which aims to limit data usage on the Bitcoin network. Saylor notes that while supporters of the proposal share the goals of reducing node running costs, keeping payments accessible, and preserving Bitcoin’s sound money focus, he opposes changing consensus rules as a solution.

Saylor added that those supporting BIP 110 were acting in good faith, stating that the debate stemmed not from individuals but from the technical and governance risks posed by the proposal. While not defending every inscription, token, file, or application, Saylor said the fundamental question was whether transactions that are valid and payable under existing rules should be blocked at the consensus level on the grounds of controversial use.

BIP 110 is projected to introduce seven new restrictions to Bitcoin’s consensus rules during its approximately one-year active period. The proposal aims to limit new scriptPubKey sizes, certain payloads, Taproot control blocks, and some Tapscript functionality, while also temporarily disabling the use of the Taproot annex, OP_SUCCESSx, and future witness and Tapleaf versions.

The proposal also includes an activation model that differs from the standard BIP 9 mechanism. It plans to lower the miner signal threshold from the usual 95% to 55%, implement a mandatory signal period, and eliminate the classic timeout mechanism. According to Saylor, opting for a lower activation threshold in a controversial consensus change increases the risk of chain breakage and economic uncertainty.

Russia Pushes Crypto Prison Law Past Elections

Russia’s law criminalizing illegal cryptocurrency exchange will not be finalized before parliamentary elections, with second and third readings pushed to the new State Duma’s autumn session.

The head of the Duma’s Financial Markets Committee confirmed this week that the bill, which carries sentences of up to seven years for illegal crypto exchange, has been shelved until after elections conclude on 20th September.

Background: What the Law Would Do

The bill passed its first reading in early July and targets what Russian authorities define as the illegal organization of cryptocurrency circulation. In practical terms, that means any crypto exchange conducted outside Central Bank-registered and licensed institutions.

The penalties are structured by scale:

Operating an unlicensed exchange carries fines of 100,000 to 300,000 rubles or an income equivalent, with up to four years imprisonment as an alternative.

If an operation is run by an organized group or proceeds exceed 3.5 million rubles, sentences rise to five years with fines of up to one million rubles.

The most serious provision allows sentences of up to seven years for those organizing large-scale illegal circulation.

All penalties come into force on 1 July 2027, giving the industry time to adjust.
