Ethereum retail cohorts have distributed nearly 1.5 million $ETH in the past two weeks.

The bearish bias is also evident in $ETH perpetuals, which have posted consistent negative funding rates over the past month.

$ETH continues to mount pressure on the $2,388 resistance.

Ethereum ($ETH) is holding above $2,300 on Tuesday, up 0.8% on the day and more than 3% over the past week despite persistent bearish signals across key metrics.

The onchain supply metric shows that retailers have been strong distributors in the past week, with wallets in the bracket of 100-1K and 1K-10K $ETH offloading roughly 820K $ETH. Most of the recent distribution likely flowed from short-term holders, as evidenced by a steep decline in the 90-day Mean Coin Age metric, which tracks the average number of days coins in that cohort have stayed in their current wallets.

The negative pattern is also observed in staking flows, where investors unstaked roughly 300K $ETH in the past week, its largest weekly outflow since November.

While distribution remains persistent across retail cohorts, whales have maintained positive sentiment, accumulating 230K $ETH last week.

On the derivatives side, $ETH perpetuals continue to show a dominant bearish leaning, with consistent negative funding rates amid a slight upward move above 14 million $ETH in open interest, indicating lingering cautious sentiment.

Lawsuits continue to plague the cryptocurrency world. Most recently, an anonymous cryptocurrency whale has filed a lawsuit against Coinbase.

According to The Block, an anonymous crypto whale has sued Coinbase for allegedly failing to return frozen funds related to a 2024 cryptocurrency hack.

The plaintiff, identified only as “DB,” filed a lawsuit on Monday against both Coinbase and the alleged thief, “John Doe.”

Although details of the case have not been released, it appears to be related to a $55 million $DAI phishing attack that occurred in August 2024.

Anonymous whale “DB” became a victim of a phishing scam on August 20, 2024, after logging into a fake page, which allowed the thief to gain access to their wallet. The attacker allegedly used “Inferno Drainer,” a platform designed to facilitate crypto theft, to drain all of the whale’s $DAI assets.

The investor claims to have contracted multiple firms to track the whereabouts of the cryptocurrency after the attack and found the stolen funds in a Coinbase account.

According to the lawsuit, Coinbase froze the assets after DB informed the exchange, but refused to return them to the plaintiff without a court order establishing ownership.

The petition stated, “While Coinbase acted reasonably in freezing the stolen cryptocurrency, its refusal to act and return the frozen funds to the plaintiff, despite the plaintiff providing sworn evidence of legal ownership, has become unreasonable.”

At this point, the anonymous whale “DB” is requesting a court order for Coinbase to return the stolen funds that belong to him. The petition states, “The plaintiff claims to be the legal owner of the stolen and frozen cryptocurrency and has the right to its immediate return.”

Kelp DAO has announced plans to migrate its cross-chain infrastructure to Chainlink’s CCIP, while disputing claims that its own configuration caused the $300M exploit linked to LayerZero.

In a detailed post published on 5 May, Kelp said the 18 April attack originated from vulnerabilities within LayerZero’s infrastructure, not from protocol-level misconfiguration as previously suggested.

The protocol pushed back against claims that its use of a 1-of-1 DVN [Decentralized Verifier Network] setup was the cause of the vulnerability.

Kelp stated that the configuration was:

widely used across the LayerZero ecosystem

included in default documentation

explicitly approved in prior communications

It cited public data suggesting that nearly half of LayerZero-integrated applications operated under similar configurations, with most transactions relying on LayerZero’s own DVN.

According to Kelp, the exploit involved a breach of LayerZero’s off-chain infrastructure, allowing attackers to manipulate RPC nodes and generate forged transaction attestations.

The attackers reportedly triggered the minting of unbacked rsETH and extracted funds across DeFi protocols.

Kelp added that it paused contracts within an hour of detecting the attack and claims to have prevented additional losses exceeding $100 million.

Kelp also questioned inconsistencies in LayerZero’s postmortem, particularly its characterization of the incident as an isolated configuration issue.

The protocol noted that LayerZero later restricted 1-of-1 DVN setups after the exploit, a move it says contradicts earlier guidance that such configurations were acceptable.

It further raised concerns about:

shared infrastructure dependencies

lack of monitoring alerts

exposure of RPC endpoints
