Coinbase tokenized stocks are now live on Base, bringing shares of major US companies, including Apple and Nvidia, into the network’s DeFi ecosystem.

The products are issued by Coinbase using Base’s B20 token standard and are backed one for one by underlying shares held with regulated custodian Alpaca. Holders have a direct beneficial claim on the corresponding shares.

The stocks are available to eligible users outside the US and can be held directly in self custody wallets. Unlike traditional equities, the tokens can trade around the clock through onchain markets.

Initial assets include tokenized shares of Apple, Nvidia, Meta, and Alphabet. Base said additional Coinbase tokenized stocks will be added over the coming weeks.

The launch also connects the assets with several DeFi protocols on Base. Aerodrome is providing liquidity for tokenized stock trading, while lending protocols including Aave can support borrowing and lending against the assets.

That could allow users to hold tokenized equities alongside stablecoins, use stocks as collateral for loans, supply them to liquidity markets, or incorporate them into automated investment products.

The tokens use B20, a standard that extends ERC 20 and is designed to remain compatible with existing wallets, decentralized exchanges, routers, and DeFi protocols. Corporate actions, including dividends and stock splits, are handled through an onchain multiplier designed to avoid disrupting existing DeFi positions.

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, has experienced a significant surge in recent days, climbing above $79,000. While the source of this rise and whether it will continue are a subject of speculation, an analytics firm has suggested that BTC may have entered a consolidation phase.

According to Hong Kong-based Bitfire Research, Bitcoin has entered a period of high-level consolidation after rising above its current levels.

The report analyzed how geopolitical risks, US long-term bond yields, and developments in cryptocurrency regulation had a combined effect on the recent Bitcoin surge.

Bitfire Research analysts stated that uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz has heightened concerns about energy prices and inflation, and that a brief rise in the US 30-year Treasury yield to approximately 5.337% has put pressure on the market.

In terms of regulation, the SEC’s proposed regulations regarding crypto assets, the implementation of relevant CFTC policies, and the future processes of the Clarity Act were cited as key variables. Analysts predicted that addressing regulatory uncertainty could increase investor confidence among institutional investors and in the tokenized financial products market.

Analysts concluded that the most important variable is capital flows, identifying it as a key factor determining future direction.

At this point, analysts noted that approximately $1.92 billion in capital had flowed into US spot Bitcoin ETFs, and that large-scale short liquidations were also supporting the rise.

According to the analysis firm, whether capital flows continue will determine whether Bitcoin’s recovery turns into a lasting medium-term uptrend.
