Arthur Hayes strengthened Ethereum’s bullish narrative after acquiring 1,290 $ETH valued at approximately $2.5 million through FalconX. He first deposited funds before completing the purchase, signaling a deliberate accumulation strategy rather than speculative trading.

This transaction shifted market attention toward institutional participation because Hayes has historically entered positions during periods of uncertainty.

Hayes’ latest move also arrived while Ethereum traded below major resistance, suggesting large investors still viewed current prices as attractive.

However, a single whale purchase rarely dictated market direction on its own.

Instead, the transaction reinforced broader confidence among market participants who continued monitoring whether additional high-value wallets would follow with similar accumulation in the coming sessions.

Short-term price surges are usually followed by some short-term retracement, especially during periods of elevated uncertainty. So far, market sentiment has not improved to support more upside.

Nevertheless, other market factors do come into play when determining the next potential outcome. For example, the level of activity in the derivatives market compared to the spot market.

In Shiba Inu Crypto's case, the recent rally was backed by robust spot positioning. CryptoQuant revealed that the rally was supported by healthy accumulation, judging by the surge in active addresses over the last few days.

There were about 1,630 active addresses on 19 July, but that number has since surged to over 3,150 addresses as of 25 July. Almost double within a few days.

The derivatives segment also demonstrated significant interest among traders. For example, SHIB open interest surged from around $30 million on 20 July to about $48 million at press time.

A relatively modest gain, but derivatives volumes lagged on Saturday, confirming that spot activity was prominent. However, the last 24 hours saw a 2,000% plus surge in derivatives, accompanied by a spike in negative funding rates.

The surge in negative funding rates suggests that derivatives traders anticipated a retracement. However, the spot accumulation could also indicate that traders might be positioning for more recovery in the coming months.

Quantum computing is a risk factor for every encrypted system on the planet, including major banks. But crypto, due to the way it works, may be the technology that gets tested first.

"Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange, said in an interview with CoinDesk. Zervigon's firm builds infrastructure to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, and he's blunt about where the first casualty is likely to show up.

"That's the first place of attack because of the decentralized nature," Zervigon said. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer."

A cryptographically relevant quantum computer, capable of breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography underpinning the Bitcoin blockchain's signatures, along with the encryption securing bank rails, doesn't exist yet. The consensus estimate for when it will is compressing, not stretching.

"The folks spending billions of dollars, like Microsoft, IBM, and others developing quantum computers, generally believe there will be a commercially relevant, cryptographically relevant quantum computer in the 2029 timeframe," Zervigon said. "That's not me making stuff up. That's based on what people like Arvind Krishna at IBM have said."

That estimate is consistent with recent hardware developments. Earlier this year, Google researchers revealed that breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography safeguarding top cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether would require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, a 20-fold decline from previous estimates. That prompted several observers, including Google, to pull forward the so-called Q-Day deadline to 2029.

Bitcoin Not Facing Immediate Quantum Threat, Coinbase CEO Says
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says quantum computing does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin. However, he also stressed that the cryptocurrency industry must begin preparing now for a future in which sufficiently powerful quantum computers become a reality.

In a post on X, Armstrong announced the launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, a new initiative backed by Coinbase alongside BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Blockstream, Strategy and other major industry participants.

The consortium aims to support the long-term security of the Bitcoin network and coordinate efforts to prepare the flagship cryptocurrency for the eventual arrival of quantum computers.

The announcement comes as Coinbase published a detailed roadmap outlining its own post-quantum strategy. The exchange said it is developing a quantum-resistant version of its proprietary key management system, known as PQ-CoreKMS.

According to the exchange, there is high confidence that fault-tolerant quantum computers will eventually be built. However, its quantum-focused board also found that such a threat is not imminent. The real lies in coordinating secure migrations across decentralized blockchain networks with millions of users.

Coinbase will co-host working sessions with Bitcoin Core developers, cryptographers and researchers beginning in August to discuss migration strategies. The company also pledged engineering resources and funding for this purpose.

In recent years, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) completed the selection and standardization of the first post-quantum cryptographic algorithms. Governments and technology companies have already started transitioning critical infrastructure toward these new standards.
