Ray Dalio says investors should own ‘a bit of Bitcoin’ as U.S. debt risks riseProminent fund manager Ray Dalio says investors should hold "a bit of Bitcoin" as the U.S. government heads deeper into a debt problem that could eventually weaken the dollar and make bonds less attractive.

The Bridgewater Associates founder said Friday that several recent moves in government bond markets fit the pattern he described in his book How Countries Go Broke. Those include Japan selling some of its U.S. Treasury holdings, long-term U.S. bond yields rising alongside a weaker dollar, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announcing that the government would increase buybacks of own bonds.

Crypto investors widely attributed last week's rally to the buyback tweaks, with bitcoin climbing from about $63,500 on Wednesday to above $78,000 by Saturday and roughly $4 billion of bearish positions force-closed along the way. Dalio says governments buy back their own debt when demand for it is thinning, and that Bessent has only limited capacity to keep doing it.

The U.S. government expects to collect about $5.5 trillion in revenue this year while spending roughly $7.5 trillion, he wrote. leaving a deficit of around $2 trillion. Federal debt excluding money the government owes itself stands near $32 trillion, while interest costs alone are expected to reach about $1 trillion.

If investors turn less willing to buy government bonds, the weak demand pushes yields higher as the government offers better returns to attract buyers. Higher rates make borrowing more expensive and can weigh on markets and the economy.

The alternative, in Dalio's view, is for the central bank to create money and buy more debt, which can weaken the currency and raise inflation. He describes neither as good.

On Friday, the 30th of January, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump officially nominated former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh to the post of Chair of the Federal Reserve.Interestingly, Warsh had previously spoken favorably of Bitcoin [$BTC] as a store of value and is considered pro-crypto in general. Regardless, the markets expected Warsh’s policy stance to be one of interest rate cuts as well as aggressive balance-sheet reduction.Crypto markets had already shifted into a bearish regime and did not take Trump’s announcement favorably. Expectations of higher rates for longer led to a market rout.

Bitcoin fell by 7% from $84.6k to $78.7k. The wider crypto market recorded the highest liquidations for 2026, unsurpassed figures even now in August.This price slide saw $2.407 billion in long positions liquidated across the market, compared to $154.7 million in short positions. The expected difference in leadership from the previous chair, Jerome Powell, led to uncertainty and sell-offs in crypto.

Such concentrated liquidations likely accelerated the decline after traders started locking in weekly gains. Moreover, the weekly recovery had not yet completely faded, despite the rapid pullback.

Spot flows added another bearish element as $FARTCOIN entered into its post-rally correction. Netflows settled around $470.15K at press time, following a few sessions of smaller Netflows.

Positive Netflows usually indicate increased exchange-side supply with tokens flowing to trading venues. The development coincided with traders getting their hands on potential gains after the weekly 17% increase in the price.

Notably, earlier periods had seen larger negative Netflows, thereby reducing the exchange supply. The recent positive reading, therefore, presented a positive development in the short-term supply picture.
