Bitcoin miner Sphere 3D faces $2.2M tariff claim equal to 77% of its cash

Crypto miner Sphere 3D said it could face approximately $2.2 million in supplemental US tariffs, before interest, on Bitcoin miners purchased in 2022 by a subsidiary it now owns.

The company said in an Aug. 24 filing that US Customs and Border Protection treated the equipment as Chinese-origin goods.

The filing stated seller-provided import documents included a certificate of origin and a certificate of manufacture certifying the miners were not of Chinese origin. It called CBP's allegation meritless, said it plans to protest, and said the amount payable remains uncertain.

The filing does not disclose CBP's origin analysis, the subsidiary or seller involved, the miner models or entries, the country Sphere 3D claims, the procedural trigger, or the certificates themselves. It also does not quantify statutory interest or say whether Sphere 3D has accrued, paid, or bonded any amount.

Arcus, a decentralized exchange (DEX) built by the team behind dYdX, has launched a protocol on Robinhood Chain that converts perpetual futures positions into transferable ERC-20 tokens and allows tokenized stocks to be used as collateral for leveraged trading.

The launch includes products such as pBTC3x and pHOOD3x, offering 3x exposure to Bitcoin and Robinhood’s HOOD stock token, respectively, the DEX announced in a Tuesday press release shared with Cointelegraph.

Its multi collateral feature initially supports SPY, QQQ and MAG7 Stock Tokens, each with a 50% loan-to-value ratio, allowing users to use tokenized equities as collateral for perpetual positions.

“Traditional markets have spent decades making sophisticated investment strategies easier to access through products like leveraged ETFs. We believe the next step is making those strategies native to blockchain infrastructure,” Arcus CEO Eddie Zhang said.

Arcus said it has recorded more than $250 million in trading volume since launching on Robinhood Chain, with average daily volume exceeding $33 million.

Robinhood Chain has grown to $596 million in total value locked since its July 1 launch, ranking among the top 15 chains by DeFi TVL, according to DeFiLlama data.

Treasury Targets Iran Crypto Sector and $100M Oil Payment NetworkOFAC Opens Iran’s Digital Asset Sector to Sanctions

Foreign crypto businesses now face broader sanctions exposure when dealing with Iran-linked counterparties following the Treasury Department’s latest economic campaign. The Treasury launched Operation Economic Outcast on Aug. 24, targeting nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels connected to Iranian nuclear, missile, cyber, and oil networks.

Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis wrote:

“One of the most sweeping components of the package is a first-of-its-kind sectoral determination that allows OFAC to sanction anyone globally that operates in or supports Iran’s digital assets sector.”

“OFAC additionally targeted individuals supporting Iran through crypto-enabled trade payments and theft,” Chainalysis added.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) expanded its authority under Executive Order 13902 to cover five Iranian economic sectors. The determination includes Iran’s digital asset sector alongside aviation, gold, shipping, and technology, allowing OFAC to sanction people found to operate in those sectors.

The designation extends an enforcement campaign that previously focused on specific exchanges and transactions tied to sanctioned Iranian parties. OFAC sanctioned four major Iranian crypto exchanges in June, including Nobitex, which handled more than half of Iran’s digital asset inflows during 2025, according to the Treasury.

A company holding dollars can receive yen without first buying a separate crypto asset to bridge the trade. JPMorgan can set the FX price, exchange the currencies and log settlement on its blockchain immediately.

Citigroup (NYSE: C)’s 24/7 USD Clearing network reaches more than 250 banks across 40-plus markets. Citi Token Services also moves tokenized commercial-bank deposits using blockchain infrastructure. Citi says combining both systems lets institutions make overseas payments quickly while needing less money parked in advance.

Real-Time Liquidity Sharing can also process payments without making banks fund each account ahead of time. Ninety seconds is still slower than the $XRP Ledger’s three-to-five-second settlement range. But companies may care more about using cash already inside a regulated bank than routing the payment through $XRP.

Bitcoin's Cryptography Could Be Cracked One Day, BitGo CEO Says
Bitcoin’s quantum-computing risk is real, but the technology needed to threaten the cryptocurrency’s cryptographic security remains far from practical, according to BitGo co-CEO Mike Belshe.

During his appearance on Fox Business, Belshe said there are currently no quantum computers capable of posing an immediate threat to Bitcoin.

However, he did acknowledge that the industry is already working on technologies that are meant to address the long-term risk.

He noted that existing quantum systems remain extremely limited compared. "We only have, like, quantum computers that theoretically work, so single digits to 100, so we’re really far away," he said.

The BitGo executive argued that the threat should not be viewed as an immediate danger. "I think it’s good news for the digital asset industry, which is that at this point there’s new investments coming in, digital billions of dollars, money, the claims money, etc.," Belshe said.

BitGo has already launched a quantum-resistant wallet, but Belshe acknowledged that the technology is still evolving. "So, we have BitGo launch a quantum-resistant wallet. It’s not perfect, and there’s more changes that need to happen," he said.

Is this the end of the crypto winter?

Belshe said the industry should expect significant volatility. "The industry goes through ups and downs, and we’re changing the way the financial system works," he said.

"Stuff takes time," Belshe added. "Traditional markets and market infrastructure run from scratch, from zero, and so as a result of that, it goes up and down."

Those who cannot handle significant price drops are not ready for massive gains, according to Belshe.

"If you’re not ready for a 20% drop, you certainly aren’t ready for 600% gains," Belshe said.
