Ethereum's much-hated staking 'tax' may already be obsolete

Ethereum's latest "funding crisis" has triggered a fierce debate over whether to tax staking rewards or to pursue funding from large ETH holders for new organizations like EthLabs. Ethereum is running out of money, according to former insiders.

The warning has sparked one of the fiercest Ethereum governance debates in months: should the network fund developers by taxing staking rewards, or just rely on wealthy Ether holders to bankroll its ecosystem?

At the center of the debate is a controversial proposal from Kleros co-founder Clément Lesaege. He suggested redirecting up to 10% of validator rewards to ecosystem funding through a protocol-level mechanism called Validator Redirected Revenue.

Lesaege argued that this may be necessary to solve Ethereum's "coordination failure" and reduce the underfunding of shared ecosystem work.

Zcash miner Fortitude grabs Nasdaq route through HeartSciences dealZcash miner Fortitude Mining Holdings has secured a path to the public markets through an all-stock merger with HeartSciences, a transaction that will place the crypto mining company on the Nasdaq without a traditional IPO.

According to a joint announcement released Tuesday, Fortitude and HeartSciences have agreed to combine in a deal that will leave Fortitude’s management team in control of the merged company. The business is expected to operate under the Fortitude name and trade on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol TUDE, subject to regulatory approvals.

Under the terms of the transaction, existing HeartSciences shareholders will retain a minority ownership stake. HeartSciences, which develops AI-powered cardiac diagnostic technologies, will continue operating under the leadership of chief executive Andrew Simpson.

Explaining the decision, Simpson said the merger would help remove what he described as the “constant cycle of raising capital” while offering what the company believes is the most favorable outcome for shareholders.

Although the two companies operate in unrelated industries, the structure effectively gives Fortitude access to public equity markets through an already listed Nasdaq company.

For HeartSciences, the agreement provides continued exposure to a publicly traded entity while allowing its healthcare operations to remain active.

The system, announced Tuesday as a demo, uses STRK20 privacy features and zero-knowledge STARK proofs to let users prove specific attributes, such as being older than 18 or holding valid credentials, without revealing their full passport details or address.

"Whether you need to prove you're over 18, hold a valid credential or meet an eligibility rule, verification should only confirm the precise fact," StarkWare said. Crypto analyst Ali Martinez shared notable technical and on-chain levels for Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to Martinez, the $60,000 region is critical for maintaining the current trend in Bitcoin.

The analyst noted that, according to on-chain data, more than 1.3 million $BTC changed hands between $60,000 and $63,000. Martinez emphasized that this region represents one of the largest volume clusters for Bitcoin, and stated that the $60,587 level should be maintained as short-term support.
