Gold Prepares Short Squeeze as Bitcoin 3-Month Setup Targets Q1 Highs
Gold (Au) is setting up for a short squeeze as gold funds posted -$2.3 billion outflows last week, marking the fourth consecutive weekly decline, with a 4-week average of -$2.0 billion. This is only below the -$3.5 billion 4-week average record seen in February. Meanwhile, Bitcoin ($BTC) is preparing a 3-Month short squeeze timeframe confluences added with the candle range theory.

Gold Outflows Hit -$2.3B, the Second-Largest on Record

According to sources, gold funds recorded -$2.3 billion in net outflows last week, marking the fourth consecutive week of withdrawals. This pushed the four-week average to approximately -$2.0 billion, the second-largest streak on record, only below the -$3.5 billion four-week average recorded in February.
The largest U.S. gold-backed ETF, SPDR Gold Shares ($GLD), has seen approximately -$2.2 billion in outflows so far this month. Year-to-date, $GLD has recorded around -$8.1 billion in outflows, on track for the first annual withdrawal since 2023.

North America saw about -$1.1 billion in outflows in May as investors took profits after strong gains, alongside range-bound price action and rotation into technology. Asia also recorded outflows, particularly from China and India, as domestic equities strengthened. Europe then provided a counterbalance, posting inflows of approximately $334 million over the same period.

Bitcoin Builds a 3-Month Short Squeeze Setup

Bitcoin has been trading in a volatile range through much of 2026, with Q1 highs reaching approximately $97,000–$98,000 before broader market pressures, ETF outflows, and geopolitical tensions. By early June, $BTC dipped to around $59,000–$60,000 lows before rebounding sharply toward $65,000–$67,000.

Billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya says Bitcoin’s historical halving cycles continue to point toward significant long-term upside. While discussing Bitcoin’s past performance, he argued that each halving has been followed by a period of consolidation before a powerful expansion phase takes over.

According to Chamath, the current cycle is following a pattern that investors have seen before, with Bitcoin still moving through the post-halving phase that has historically preceded major rallies.

Chamath explained that Bitcoin investors often spend the first few months after a halving trying to understand the market’s new supply dynamics.

However, the biggest gains have typically come later.

“Within six months to a year and 18 months of these things, there are these crazy price appreciation cycles that happen.” He said.

Looking at previous cycles, Bitcoin gained roughly 45x after the first halving, nearly 28x after the second, and around 8x after the third over 18 months.

While returns have gradually decreased as Bitcoin has matured, the gains remain substantial compared to most traditional assets.

Chamath also pointed to a major difference in this cycle: spot Bitcoin ETFs.

“The other thing that’s happened is we’ve commercialized Bitcoin,” he said.

In his view, ETFs have opened the door for a much larger group of investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional financial markets. That additional demand did not exist during previous halving cycles.

As a result, Bitcoin now has both the historical tailwind of reduced supply and a growing institutional demand channel.

Chamath applied the average returns from Bitcoin’s second and third halving cycles to the current market structure.

Using those historical averages, the model produced a theoretical valuation of roughly $1.14 million per Bitcoin.

Every time price pushes into a resistance zone, you’ve basically got setup risk for a trap.

Right now, $XRP’s structure is showing that in real time. On the daily, it’s bouncing hard off the $1.15 base and grinding up as market sentiment flips back risk-on after the U.S.-Iran peace deal.

But calling this a clean breakout is probably early.

In the early June move, $XRP already tried pushing through $1.25 and got rejected, with sellers stepping in and taking control.

That’s usually where things get tricky.

Technically, traders start fading strength into resistance, expecting the same rejection again. It builds overhead supply, and if longs get too aggressive, it can turn into a bull trap.

We already saw a version of that with a 6% pullback after the price tapped $1.25 and got smacked down.

Naturally, the question becomes: Is Ripple [$XRP] setting up a similar structure?

One thing standing out is Funding Rates. $XRP’s OI-Weighted Funding Rate is basically sitting near rock bottom.

For context, the OI-Weighted Funding Rate tracks whether traders are mostly long or short, but gives more weight to where the big leveraged positions are.

When funding is very positive, it usually means too many traders are long and the market is overheated.

Right now it’s the opposite; funding is deeply negative, meaning most traders are short. Looking at $XRP’s last rejection from resistance, this kind of positioning doesn’t look random.

Instead, it actually lines up with a more intentional setup, making the bull trap thesis far from far-fetched.
