The Nasdaq Composite Index has recorded its longest winning streak in over 15 years, and tech ETFs have hit weekly highs. However, according to Michael Hartnett, chief investment strategist at Bank of America, this rapid rebound that has excited investors may be turning into a costly "bull trap."

The Nasdaq Composite has recently risen for 13 consecutive trading days, its longest winning streak since July 2009; the tech ETF XLK closed at a new weekly high, above $153. However, the financial ETF XLF failed to hold its 200-day moving average, and its divergence from the tech sector poses a potential warning sign. In Hartnett's view, this rebound, driven by record cash outflows, is evolving from an "oversold correction" into a dangerous zone that could trap bulls.

Regarding fund flows, a record $172.2 billion flowed out of cash last week, with $11.3 billion flowing into the stock market, $7.9 billion into bonds, and gold and cryptocurrencies each receiving approximately $1.2 billion in net inflows.

Meanwhile, Bank of America's April global fund manager survey showed that institutional pessimism was at its highest level since June 2025; however, actual capital flows were quite the opposite-global equity inflows are expected to exceed $1 trillion in 2026, potentially setting a new record.

Regarding this contradiction, Hartnett offered a rather sharp assessment: "Look at what they do, not what they say." Short sellers worry that inflation has not yet peaked, and the bond market faces a new round of sell-off risk; long sellers are betting that earnings will support record highs. But Hartnett's overall conclusion is clear: the current market has entered a "bull trap" zone.

Market analyst Diana notes that Tobu Top Tours, a major subsidiary of Tobu Railway, has partnered with SBI Ripple Asia to build a new prepaid token payment platform on the $XRP Ledger. Well, this is a strategic push to bring a substantial portion of Japan’s vast prepaid economy on-chain.

At its core, the system will turn prepaid value into blockchain-based tokens, issued on a public ledger and backed by Japanese yen.

As liquidity tightens, price becomes more sensitive to incoming demand, which allows even moderate inflows to drive sharper upside moves. However, this same condition introduces fragility, as thinner liquidity reduces the market’s ability to absorb selling pressure.

If support weakens, downside moves can accelerate quickly, reflecting a structure where supply constraint amplifies both upward and downward volatility.

Demand structure weakens as perpetuals drive momentum

As staking continues to lock supply, the demand side begins to show a different character, where derivatives take the lead instead of spot conviction.

Activity shifts quickly into leveraged markets, with Perpetual Volume rising to $34.74 billion, far above the $14.29 billion Spot Volume, which shows traders prefer speed over stability.

However, Open Interest (OI) fell to around $31.18 billion, down 5.75%, which suggests traders are not building sustained positions but rotating exposure.

Consequently, Funding Rates turned slightly negative, reflecting growing short pressure even as price held. This creates a mixed structure, where some traders position for downside while others chase short-term moves.

As a result, price becomes more reactive rather than stable, implying that users face faster swings, where gains can reverse quickly without strong spot demand to support them.
