Bitcoin's path through 2026 now runs through global economic policy.

The disruption around the Strait of Hormuz has moved beyond a commodity-price event and into the machinery of governments.

The International Energy Agency said crude and refined-product exports through the strait had fallen to less than 10% of pre-conflict levels after about 20 million barrels per day moved through the route in 2025, equal to roughly a quarter of global seaborne oil trade.

That is the scale of shock that stops being only a Brent chart.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration now expects Middle East production shut-ins to average 7.5 million b/d in March, peak at 9.1 million b/d in April, and drive a 5.1 million b/d global inventory draw in the second quarter. It also sees Brent averaging $115 a barrel in 2Q26 before easing later in the year.

For Bitcoin, the issue is whether markets treat the oil shock as a force that keeps inflation sticky and financial conditions tight, or as a shock severe enough to pull governments and central banks toward more support.

That fork leaves Bitcoin with two defensible pathways into year-end: a stagflation-driven liquidity squeeze that pushes it back into high-beta collateral behavior, or a policy-accommodation trade that lets it reclaim its scarce-asset narrative.

The policy response is already visible. IEA members agreed to release 400 million barrels from emergency stocks, the largest coordinated release in the agency's history.

The U.S. Department of Energy said the White House authorized 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, with delivery expected to take about 120 days at planned discharge rates.

Coinbase Adds SOL Collateral for Loans of Up to $100,000

Coinbase added Solana as collateral for crypto-backed loans, expanding its on-chain lending product on Base.

Coinbase expanded its on-chain lending product on May 12 by adding Solana (SOL) as a supported collateral asset. Users can now borrow up to $100,000 against their SOL holdings through the exchange's Morpho integration on Base. The addition places SOL alongside Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and several other assets already supported under the same framework.

Ben Shen, Coinbase's head of financial services and loyalty products, said the SOL addition is a step toward making Coinbase the preferred platform for trading and holding Solana. He said the ability to access liquidity against held assets is central to that goal. Shen added that the expansion reflects the company's broader commitment to increasing the utility of assets customers hold on the platform.

Since launching last year, Coinbase's crypto-backed loan product has crossed $2.3 billion in total originations. BTC remains the dominant collateral asset, accounting for $2.17 billion of that total. ETH-backed loans account for approximately $110 million, followed by XRP at $31.6 million, cbETH at $3.34 million, Dogecoin (DOGE) at $2.33 million, and Litecoin (LTC) at around $802,000.

Bitcoin reduces its drawdown from all-time highs from 50% to 35% with its rebound to $80,000.

History shows that new all-time highs have come within a year during similar events.

The Buffett indicator could be calling Bitcoin's new $160,000 record highs in advance.

New research from network economist Timothy Peterson released on Tuesday shows what happens when $BTC/USD claws back significant losses.

“I looked at every time Bitcoin went from a -50% drawdown to a -35% drawdown (the situation we are in today),” he revealed in a post on X.

Bitcoin dipped below $60,000 in late February, a move that brought its drawdown versus its $126,200 all-time highs beyond 50%.

Since then, conditions have eased, and price currently trades around $81,000. Against its October 2025 peak, the pair is 35% lower, per data from TradingView.

As Peterson confirms in an accompanying chart, such moves have characterized price action throughout its past bear markets. What is more exciting for Bitcoin bulls, however, is what traditionally comes next.

He added that “7 out of 9 times it hit a new all-time high within a year.”

The last time that a similar recovery took place was at the end of the 2022 bear market, which saw a maximum drawdown of just over 70%.

Data from onchain analytics platform Glassnode shows that it took until December 2023 for that correction to become 35% against all-time highs from two years prior.

Bitcoin’s new record high then came in March 2024.

Despite uncertainty over geopolitical and macroeconomic conditions going forward, Bitcoin is not without its bullish predictions this month.Examining Bitcoin versus gold, Matthew Sigel, head of digital asset research at VanEck, offered $160,000 per coin as a conservative estimate.

Three big things are hitting global markets at the same time right now. US inflation came in higher than expected, the Iran ceasefire is falling apart, and markets are bracing for a critical meeting between President Trump and China’s Xi Jinping in Beijing.

The result is that the US dollar is getting stronger, Treasury yields are rising, and the chances of the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates this year have essentially dropped to zero.

The euro dropped to $1.1735. The British pound slipped to $1.3532. The dollar index, which measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies, held near 98.335, its strongest level in a week.

The Inflation Number That Changed Everything
On Tuesday, the US government reported that prices rose 3.8% over the past year through April. That is higher than the 3.7% analysts expected and a big jump from the previous 3.3% reading. Gasoline prices alone surged 28.4%, largely because of the war with Iran driving oil prices higher. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, accelerated 0.4% in a single monthIn simple terms, things are getting more expensive faster than expected, and the Federal Reserve cannot cut interest rates when inflation is this high.

Markets now see a 35% chance the Fed actually raises rates in December rather than cutting them.
