Fabio Panetta elected Chair of Bank for International Settlements Board

Fabio Panetta, the Governor of the Bank of Italy and a long-standing skeptic of unbacked cryptocurrencies, has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements. He will assume the role on 3 June 2026 for a three-year term, succeeding François Villeroy de Galhau.

The BIS is essentially the central bank for central banks. It coordinates monetary policy among 63 member central banks and sets the intellectual agenda for global financial regulation.

A crypto critic takes the wheel

Panetta’s views on crypto are well-documented and decidedly unenthusiastic. He has repeatedly warned that unbacked crypto assets pose risks to financial stability and that large private stablecoins could threaten monetary sovereignty.

His preferred alternative has always been central bank digital currencies. Panetta has been one of the most vocal advocates for the digital euro during his time at both the European Central Bank and the Bank of Italy. He sees CBDCs not as a nice-to-have experiment, but as a necessary defensive move by central banks to maintain relevance in a digitizing financial system.

The BIS strategy review and what comes next

Panetta’s election arrives at a particularly consequential moment. The BIS is currently completing a strategy review that will shape its priorities for the coming years. The institution has been expanding its work on digital finance, launching innovation hubs and research programs focused on how tokenized assets and programmable money might reshape the plumbing of global finance.

The announcement also included other notable appointments. Gabriel Galípolo, head of the Central Bank of Brazil, was named Chair of the meeting of Governors from September 2026.

CME Group announced plans to launch
Nasdaq CME Cryptocurrency Index Futures on June 8, expanding its suite of regulated digital asset derivatives products as institutional demand for diversified crypto exposure continues to grow. According to the company's announcement, the contracts are currently awaiting regulatory review. The exchange operator said the contracts are designed to provide investors with a more capital-efficient way to gain exposure to leading digital assets through a single financially settled instrument. At expiration, the contracts will settle against the Nasdaq CME Cryptocurrency Settlement Price Index, which tracks the performance of the most actively traded cryptocurrencies in the market. As of May 14, the index includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Chainlink, and Stellar. CME expands institutional crypto offerings The launch marks another step in CME's broader expansion into cryptocurrency derivatives as traditional financial firms continue building products tied to digital assets. In comparison to the top five coins, none moved in the same direction. Bitcoin OI slipped 0.36%. Ethereum added 0.94%. Solana dropped 5.96%. XRP fell 2.52%. All four traded lower on the day. $DOGE held near $0.1157, up about 1%.

A HYPE whale just placed a $72 mln bearish bet — What does it know?

A whale shorts bet amid ongoing market uncertainty has raised questions about whether something significant is coming for the broader financial market.

Data from the derivatives platform CoinGlass reveals that a whale wallet address (0x8def9f5) has opened short positions worth $72.32 million across multiple markets, including crypto and tech stocks such as Bitcoin, Hyperliquid, TSLA, and NVDA, among others.

The report shows that this whale is heavily positioned in crypto, with $47.78 million in Hyperliquid, $12.37 million in Bitcoin, and $73.41K in Toncoin.

Whale’s strong conviction in $HYPE short bet

In addition to these crypto bets, especially in Hyperliquid, another whale appears to have followed the same trend, as disclosed by crypto transaction tracker Onchain Lens.

A post on X revealed that a whale shorted a significant 338,084 $HYPE tokens worth $13.40 million at an average price level of $39.65.

Looking at these massive short bets around $HYPE, the question now is, what’s next for the asset?

According to TradingView, $HYPE’s daily chart shows that the asset has lost support from both an ascending trendline and the horizontal $40 level, which it had been holding since the 10th of April.

In fact, $HYPE’s price has not only broken below these key support levels but has also closed a daily candle under $40.

Based on the current price action, if the momentum continues and $HYPE remains below the $40 level, there is strong potential for the asset to extend its downward move and decline another 8.50% toward its next support at $35.

However, this bearish outlook could be invalidated if the price reclaims and holds above the $40 level.

What DTCC is actually building
The Collateral AppChain integrates Chainlink’s Runtime Environment, known as CRE, to automate collateral workflows that have historically relied on manual processes. Instead of humans shuffling spreadsheets and making phone calls to verify asset values across time zones, smart contracts handle the pricing and settlement automatically.

The platform is designed to operate 24/7, a meaningful departure from the traditional finance world where collateral management is typically constrained by business hours and geographic boundaries. The goal is near-real-time collateral movement across different blockchains and international markets.

DTCC unveiled the initiative on May 12, 2026, during what the firm calls its Great Collateral Experiment. The Collateral AppChain is slated to launch in Q4 2026.

Nadine Chakar, DTCC’s Managing Director, framed the partnership around the transformative potential of unified onchain data. The vision is a shared infrastructure layer that multiple participants in the collateral ecosystem, think banks, asset managers, custodians, can plug into rather than each maintaining their own siloed systems.
