Tokenization Doubles to $25B — But Fed Warns of DeFi Risks

The Federal Reserve just weighed in on one of crypto’s fastest-growing sectors, tokenization, and the message was measured but clear. Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook delivered a landmark speech at the Central Bank of West African States Conference in Dakar, Senegal, on May 8, 2026.

She confirmed that tokenized assets in the U.S. have more than doubled in market capitalization over the past year. It is reaching approximately $25 billion. Federal Reserve news today carries real weight for the RWA tokenization sector, and Cook did not hold back on either the opportunity or the risk.

The Opportunity Cook Sees

Cook opened with genuine enthusiasm for the technology. Tokenization, in her framing, is not a threat to traditional finance; it is an upgrade layer sitting on top of it. “I do not see tokenization as replacing traditional market infrastructure,” she said. “The technology presents a tremendous opportunity for innovation in the sector.”

The specific benefits she highlighted are already playing out in institutional markets. Smart contracts enable automated settlement across multi-leg transactions. It reduces the time gap between trading and settlement. Tokenized money market funds allow intraday investment and redemption, improving returns on idle cash. Repo transactions executed on-chain can provide same-day liquidity that overnight processes currently cannot match.

For emerging economies, Cook saw particular promise. Programmable fractional ownership could open capital markets to investors with limited resources. It’s a point she connected directly to her own experience studying economics in Dakar decades earlier. Cross-border repo transactions combined with on-chain foreign exchange could unlock new funding strategies for institutions operating across currency zones.

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin ($BTC), surged above $82,000 on news of a possible deal between the US and Iran, coupled with institutional support. However, new developments regarding the conflict in the Middle East pushed $BTC back below $80,000.

However, this recent downturn did not affect the options market, and it entered an upward trend.

Accordingly, options investors are targeting $115,000 for Bitcoin by the end of the year.

According to the data, the number of investors betting that Bitcoin will rise above $115,000 by the end of 2026 in the options market is steadily increasing.

The 33% price increase since the annual low of $60,130 on February 6th is playing a significant role in increasing bullish expectations.

It is estimated that there is approximately $6 billion in open positions in Bitcoin options that expire on December 25th.

A significant portion of this consists of call option bets on the Bitcoin price rising above $115,000. Open positions for $115,000 and above are approximately $1.85 billion.

However, at prices of $55,000 and below, there is a $1 billion put option, a figure that is also noteworthy.

This means that options traders are betting on extreme price expectations in both bullish and bearish markets. If the bulls appear overly optimistic, those taking short positions appear equally overly pessimistic.

A wallet address believed to be affiliated with crypto financial services platform Matrixport has sold an additional 100,000 $HYPE tokens, valued at approximately $4.26 million, according to on-chain monitoring service Onchain Lens. The transaction marks the second major sale from the same address in recent weeks.

Continued Token Liquidation Raises Questions

Onchain Lens data shows that the suspected Matrixport address has now liquidated a total of 200,000 $HYPE tokens across multiple transactions, converting them into 8.447 million $USDC. The latest sale follows an earlier transfer of 100,000 $HYPE that was similarly swapped for stablecoins. The consistent pattern of large-scale selling has drawn attention from market analysts, who are monitoring the address for further activity.

The identity of the wallet owner has not been officially confirmed by Matrixport, but on-chain sleuths have linked the address to the firm based on transaction histories and known wallet clusters. Matrixport, which offers crypto lending, custody, and trading services, has not publicly commented on the sales.

Market Implications and Token Performance

$HYPE, the native token of the Hyperliquid ecosystem, has experienced price volatility amid the ongoing sell pressure. While the total amount sold represents a fraction of the token’s circulating supply, large dumps from significant holders can influence short-term market sentiment. Stablecoins have their 'permission slip.' Now comes the hard part.Stablecoins have moved from crypto niche to an institutional priority, but the next phase of adoption will depend on infrastructure, privacy and real-world usability, executives from MoonPay, Ripple and Paxos said at Consensus Miami 2026.

Richard Harrison, MoonPay’s vice president of banking and payment partnerships, said traditional finance firms are entering stablecoins faster because regulation has made the market easier to navigate.

“What GENIUS brought us was clarity,” Harrison said. “It was like a permission slip for companies to enter into stablecoins.”

Harrison said stablecoins are also a natural evolution of payments, where speed and convenience have long been limited by legacy rails. Cross-border transfers can still take days and remittances can carry steep fees, he said, while stablecoins allow near-instant, one-to-one value transfer.

Still, Harrison said stablecoins represent only a small share of global remittances today and may reach roughly 10% within five years. Business-to-business payments are already a clear use case, he said, but consumer adoption remains harder.

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, said institutional customers require regulated products, strong counterparties and trusted custody arrangements before moving meaningful volume on chain.
