Hedera ($HBAR) continues to be under downward pressure over the last 24 hours: It tumbled 0.60% to trade near the price of $0.0868. The decline follows a slight cooling across the crypto market, which likely included fairly stable crypto, like Bitcoin, which has registered slight losses. Yet the drop on $HBAR has been more pronounced still, and it indicates persistent weakness throughout altcoins as investor sentiment remains fragile. The total crypto market capitalization decreased by about 0.24% over the same period, and Bitcoin fell 0.15%.

Amid this, Hedera’s sharper dip reflects a pattern often seen during uncertain phases. Assets with lower liquidity or weaker short-term narratives tend to fall faster as capital rotates toward perceived safety.

Hedera ($HBAR) Slips: Weak Sentiment for Crypto

Notably, the widely tracked Fear and Greed Index is currently at 29, firmly in the “fear” zone. This reading usually indicates a weakened willingness to take any risks. Thus traders tend to scale back their exposure to altcoins such as $HBAR in order to invest in more established cryptos. Under such circumstances, cheap tokens without catalysts in the immediate future tend to drift lower, as is the case for Hedera.

Recent trading information suggests that there is not much buying interest. Volume dropped more than 6% to about $46.9 million in the past day. This accumulation comes as Bitcoin's price remains below the key $70,000 mark. As of press time, Bitcoin is priced at $66,860, consolidating after falling 0.18% in the past 24 hours, while the cryptocurrency is up 0.26% on the weekly chart.

At current market prices, this accumulation represents over $660 million in buying pressure. Such behavior typically reflects strategic positioning by large corporations. Investors believe the current price range is either undervalued or a strong support level.

Crypto analyst Maartunn is predicting a potential "short squeeze" for $XRP based on specific warning signs flashing in the derivatives market.

Why a short squeeze is likely

The middle panel of the chart tracks Aggregated Open Interest (OI). Open interest represents the total number of active, open futures or options contracts that have not yet been settled.

The OI line is climbing sharply, reaching over 943 million. This indicates that a significant amount of new money is entering the $XRP derivatives market and traders are opening fresh positions.

The bottom panel displays the aggregated funding rate. In cryptocurrency perpetual futures, funding rates are periodic payments made between traders to keep the contract price aligned with the actual spot price of the asset.

When the rate is positive, traders betting the price will go up (longs) pay the traders betting it will go down (shorts). This means the market is broadly bullish.

When the rate is negative, the shorts have to pay the longs. This happens when the market is heavily skewed bearish, and there is massive demand to short the asset.

The bottom panel is filled with red bars dropping below the zero line (currently at -0.0010). This persistent negative funding rate proves that the vast majority of traders are aggressively shorting $XRP.

Because Open Interest is going up while Funding Rates are negative, it means the massive influx of new money entering the market is primarily opening short positions. The market is heavily crowded with traders betting that the price of $XRP will fall.

Investors holding 100 to 10,000 BTC have realized $30.9 billion in losses during the first quarter of 2026. Among these losses, whales have recorded the largest losses at $337 million per day, according to CryptoRover.

This marked the highest daily rate of losses since the 2022 bear market, signaling one of the most aggressive distribution cycles on record.
