Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume, experienced a significant service disruption Friday morning after an outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud infrastructure provider underpinning the platform, knocked out trading access for a significant portion of its user base.The company’s official status page noted that some users may be unable to trade or experience degraded performance, and that its dev team was actively investigating the matter.

AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon and one of the world’s leading cloud computing providers, serves as critical backend infrastructure for a wide range of financial services companies, including many of the world’s top crypto exchanges. When AWS experiences regional disruptions, the effects cascade rapidly across platforms dependent on its services.
The timing was particularly jarring. Coinbase had just wrapped a strong Q1 2026 earnings call, during which it emerged that the exchange bought $88 million worth of bitcoin during the quarter. Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas also confirmed on the same call that Coinbase’s USDC contract with stablecoin issuer Circle auto-renews every three years into perpetuity and cannot be terminated, underscoring just how deeply the exchange’s revenue model is tied to stablecoin infrastructure.

Arbitrum delegates approved the release of $71 million in ether frozen after last month’s Lazarus-linked rsETH exploit, setting up a direct clash between decentralized governance and an active U.S. court fight over who owns the funds.

The on-chain vote, which closed Friday afternoon Hong Kong time with more than 90% support, authorizes the release of 30,765 $ETH frozen by Arbitrum’s Security Council after the April 18 exploit, when attackers used unbacked rsETH tokens as collateral on Aave to borrow roughly $230 million in $ETH from the protocol.

The funds are earmarked for a coordinated industry recovery effort led by Aave, KelpDAO, LayerZero, EtherFi and Compound, aimed at making affected users whole.But the frozen ether is also at the center of an escalating legal dispute in Manhattan federal court.

Last week, attorney Charles Gerstein, representing families holding roughly $877 million in unpaid terrorism judgments against North Korea, served a restraining notice on Arbitrum DAO claiming the frozen $ETH constitutes North Korean property because the exploit has been widely attributed to Pyongyang’s Lazarus Group.

That triggered an emergency legal fight.

Aave moved earlier this week to vacate the restraining notice, arguing the assets belong to innocent users, not North Korea, and warning that continued delays risk “cascading liquidations” and broader instability across decentralized finance markets.

Gerstein fired back Tuesday, arguing the exploit was not theft but fraud, meaning the attackers obtained legal title to the $ETH by deceiving Aave’s lending markets with worthless collateral.

Friday’s governance vote does not mean the funds move immediately.

Because the measure was structured as a Constitutional AIP under Arbitrum’s governance framework, the transfer cannot be executed for at least eight days, giving the Manhattan cour

Coinbase loses nearly $400 million in Q1 as CEO seeks to reduce dependence on spot crypto trading
The U.S.-based crypto exchange reported total first-quarter revenue of $1.41 billion, down 31% when compared to the same period in 2025.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the company is transforming from a “spot-focused crypto platform to a place” where users can trade many asset classes.

Coinbase posted a net loss of $394.1 million in the first quarter as cryptocurrency prices fell dramatically during the period, causing the exchange to register significant losses on the digital assets it held on its balance sheet, the company said Thursday in its latest earnings report.

The company lost $482 million on the crypto that was held for investment purposes.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong remained optimistic, saying that eventually "all of finance" will move onchain and his company was built to capitalize on the transformation.

"Despite the crypto market being down, the fundamental growth of the onchain economy is strong," Armstrong said in a video posted to X. He also said Coinbase is transforming from a "spot-focused crypto platform to a place" where users can trade many asset classes, including derivatives, commodities, and futures trading, and prediction markets event contracts.

In the first quarter of 2025, Coinbase (COIN) earned $66 million in net income. This most recent quarter is Coinbase's second consecutive quarter with a net loss. In its previous quarterly release, the company registered a net loss of $667 million.

The U.S.-based crypto exchange also reported during the first quarter of 2026 total revenues of $1.41 billion, down 31% when compared to the same period in 2025. Transaction revenue also fell 40% year-on-year to $756 million. Subscription and services revenue suffered less, dropping 14% to $584 million, Coinbase reported.
