As CryptoQuant community analyst Maartunn noted in a Sunday X post, XRP’s open interest has surged sharply. Here, “open interest” is a metric that measures the total number of current positions related to the cryptocurrency across all centralized exchanges. This metric includes both short and long positions.

As shown in the chart shared by Maartunn, XRP’s open interest climbed to $943 million over the weekend.

The increase in this metric naturally indicates a surge in speculative activity among derivatives market traders. So, what kind of bets are traders placing? The answer to this question can be inferred from funding rates, which track the periodic fees paid between derivatives contract holders.

As seen in the chart, the funding rate remained negative during the surge in open interest, indicating that short sellers were paying a premium to long positions. In other words, the new positions tended to be bearish.

Typically, a sharp rise in open interest leads to market volatility, as the risk of mass liquidations may increase. The side more likely to face such a squeeze is often the dominant one. Since the increase in new open interest is accompanied by negative funding rates, the likelihood of a short squeeze is higher.

XRP has rebounded over the past day, so short liquidations may have played a role in this. However, as analysts highlighted in a recent post, open interest remains at elevated levels even after the rebound.
