Kakao Sells $670 Million Stake In Korean Crypto Exchange Operator Dunamu To Hana Bank

South Korean internet giant Kakao is partially exiting its early investment in crypto exchange operator Dunamu, selling a stake worth 1 trillion won ($670 million) to domestic commercial bank Hana Bank.

Kakao said in a stock exchange filing on Friday that its investment arm, Kakao Investment, will sell a 6.55% stake in Dunamu. Hana Bank, a subsidiary of Hana Financial Group, will buy the stake in cash, the Korean banking giant said in a separate filing. The deal is set to be completed in June.

Following the transaction, Kakao’s stake in Dunamu will decrease to 4.03% from 10.58%. The company said the share sale is aimed at “securing funds for future investments.” Hana Bank, meanwhile, said it invests in Dunamu to “secure competitiveness in new finance.” The lender has been expanding into digital assets, partnering with crypto exchange Crypto.com in March to promote stablecoin payments for foreign visitors in Korea.

Kakao, controlled by billionaire Kim Beom-su, first invested in Dunamu in 2013, a year after the Seoul-based company was founded. At the time, Dunamu was a news aggregator. It pivoted to fintech in 2014 with the launch of stock trading platform StockPlus, then crypto exchange Upbit in 2017. Since then, Upbit has grown to become Korea’s largest crypto exchange by daily trading volume. The success of Upbit has propelled Dunamu’s cofounders Song Chi-hyung and Kim Hyoung-nyon into the world’s billionaire ranks.

Kakao’s divestment comes on the heels of Dunamu’s landmark merger with the payment arm of Korean search giant Naver. The merger, set to be completed in June, values the combined entity at $13.6 billion. It’s poised to create a domestic fintech juggernaut offering a slew of financial services from payments and insurance to crypto and securities trading.

Cryptocurrency analytics company MakroVision has assessed Bitcoin’s recovery process in recent weeks.

The technical analysis shared by the company stated that Bitcoin has strongly recovered from its low point of $60,000 and has regained the critical region between $72,000 and $75,000.

According to MacroVision, Bitcoin is now testing the key resistance level of $82,500. Analysts note that this level may be tested for the third time in the short term, and the absence of strong selling pressure or sharp rejection so far is a positive signal for the uptrend.

According to the company, the most important support zone for Bitcoin is between $72,000 and $75,000. In upward movements, after the $82,500 level, the $85,000 to $86,000 range stands out as a significant resistance area.

MacroVision stated that if Bitcoin breaks through these resistance zones, the price could advance to $91,700 or higher. The analysis noted that maintaining the current support zone is critical for the continuation of the uptrend, and that any potential pullbacks could be considered constructive corrections as long as the price remains above this area.

The company stated that, in the current outlook, Bitcoin remains strong and whether the short-term bullish momentum in the market can be sustained will depend on price behavior at resistance levels in the coming period.

In comparison to the top five coins, none moved in the same direction. Bitcoin OI slipped 0.36%. Ethereum added 0.94%. Solana dropped 5.96%. XRP fell 2.52%. All four traded lower on the day. $DOGE held near $0.1157, up about 1%.

As Cryptopolitan reported earlier, $DOGE open interest stood at $629 million the previous week. It has nearly tripled since.

Speculative capital is rotating, not growing

The broader crypto market held near $2.8 trillion in total valuation on May 14. Capital did not leave the sector; it only shifted. Money moved out of BTC and ETH derivatives and into a higher-volatility asset. That pattern has appeared before.

In 2021 and parts of 2024, leveraged positions in meme coins built up fast during periods when larger tokens traded sideways, then unwound once momentum broke.

Intellectia.AI reported that open $DOGE positions reached 15.13 billion tokens worth roughly $1.67 billion. Analysts flagged the $0.11 level as a key support. A break below that level could trigger cascading liquidations in leveraged accounts.

The leverage cuts both ways

Data shows $DOGE perpetual futures OI at $1.71 billion, with technical indicators pointing toward a possible test of $0.12 resistance. The 50-day and 100-day exponential moving averages support a short-term recovery outlook.

But the same leverage supporting the move can accelerate losses if sentiment flips. In previous meme coin rallies, futures activity outpaced spot demand, leaving the market exposed when traders closed positions.

Crypto pushed through the macro selling on Friday, with bitcoin reclaiming $81,000 after the U.S. Senate Banking Committee advanced the Clarity Act in a 15-9 bipartisan vote late Thursday.

Bitcoin traded at $81,055 in Asian hours, up 2.3% over 24 hours and 1.9% over the past seven days, per CoinDesk data, recovering the level it had slipped under on Wednesday's producer price index print.

$XRP led the major altcoins with a 4.5% gain to $1.49, extending its weekly run to 7.6% and making it the standout performer on the seven-day tape. Dogecoin added 3% to $0.1159 and is now up 8.9% over the past seven days, while BNB gained 2% to $681 and solana climbed 2% to $91.

The Clarity Act vote was the first major bipartisan move on crypto market structure legislation in months. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott managed a last-moment maneuver to admit amendments he had earlier rejected, winning over two Democratic votes and securing the 15-9 margin after several hours of partisan sniping.

"This process has been one of the most informative and challenging processes I've been through as a United States senator," Scott said after the vote, as CoinDesk reported. Senator Elizabeth Warren, the committee's ranking Democrat, objected to the procedural shift that brought the additional amendments back into play, telling colleagues "the deal you like, it's not the deal I like."

The bill now moves to a merger with a similar version approved earlier by the Senate Agriculture Committee in a party-line vote. The merged legislation will then face a full Senate vote, followed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Several substantive issues remain unresolved, including law enforcement concerns and an ethics provision that several Democrats have flagged as a condition for their broader support.
