However, a new macro signal is now getting attention: Fed liquidity may be turning supportive again.

DeFi's new front: VerifiedX bets bitcoin's next chapter is programmable, privateWith bitcoin cementing itself as institutional crypto’s reserve asset, a new wave of infrastructure projects is looking to answer a longstanding question: What exactly should people do with it?

VerifiedX, a decentralized layer-1 blockchain and Bitcoin sidechain project, said the key to the answer lies in making the largest cryptocurrency programmable while preserving the core ethos that made it valuable in the first place.

“Bitcoin needs to be left alone,” Jay Pollak, head of strategy and business development at the VerifiedX Foundation, told CoinDesk in an interview. “People need to build around it and build utility with it.”

VerifiedX positions itself between bitcoin maximalists — supporters who say $BTC is the only digital asset anyone needs or holds any significant long-term value — and the sprawling decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem built around Ethereum and other blockchains.

Rather than converting bitcoin into representations like wrapped bitcoin (WBTC), in which custody of the original token passes to a third party, Pollak says the project enables “native” programmable bitcoin ownership through a self-custodial architecture using threshold signatures and taproot-based addresses.

The project refers to itself as both a sidechain and what Pollak calls a “reliever chain” — a term the company is trying to popularize to distinguish itself from existing scaling systems for the original blockchain.

“We’re not reinventing or changing Bitcoin,” he said. “You never leave the Bitcoin ecosystem.”

Andresen was arrested in Germany on US charges connected to darknet-market activity and money laundering.

From darknet marketplace to bullion dealer

Andresen’s case traces back to Dream Market, one of the most prominent darknet marketplaces of the last decade. The platform operated from 2013 to 2019, processing significant volumes of illicit goods with Bitcoin serving as the primary payment method.

The conversion of crypto into gold bars is a well-documented laundering technique. Instead of trying to cash out large sums of cryptocurrency through exchanges that require identity verification, you buy a physical commodity that’s been a store of value for millennia and is significantly harder to trace.

A growing enforcement pattern

This case fits into a broader and increasingly aggressive enforcement posture from the DOJ. The focus has historically been on crypto mixers, those services that blend transactions together to obscure their origins. But the Andresen indictment signals something different. Prosecutors are now looking downstream at the people and businesses that convert crypto into physical assets.

After a sharp drop, Hyperliquid successfully defended the $40 level and rebounded to $ 42.80. With HYPE now hovering around $42, some whales have decided to cash out, most likely to lock in gains. 

According to Onchain Lens, a whale sold 213,419 HYPE for $8.93 million at $41.84 per HYPE. After the sale, the whale realized $2.8 million in profit.
This whale has been on a buying spree, over the past 2 months scooping up 467,188 HYPE for $16.63 million. Having bought at an average price of $35.59, the entire holdings sit in profit.

After the sale, the whale still holds 253,769 HYPE worth $10.5 million.

The whale’s decision to cash out after HYPE retraced from $47 shows fear of holding the positions for extended periods.

Crypto Quant Researcher Flags Major Dangerous Setup for Bitcoin Dating Back to February — Details
Bitcoin may be on the verge of a sharp market correction as on-chain data reveals a dangerous structural shift reminiscent of previous cyclical peaks.

According to Julio Moreno, Head of Research at blockchain analytics firm CryptoQuant, the rapid accumulation of unrealized profits among short-term traders is signaling an overextended market vulnerable to a near-term pullback.

The current setup stands in contrast to February, when traders endured extreme unrealized losses of nearly 27%, the deepest level of capitulation recorded since 2022. That severe undervaluation ultimately laid the groundwork for the recent massive price rally.

However, that momentum has now pushed unrealized profit margins back into dangerously elevated territory. Historically, such high concentrations of paper gains serve as a reliable leading indicator that a market cooling-off period is imminent in the coming weeks.

Compounding this risk is the instability in the positioning of short-term whale wallets. CryptoQuant data also reveals that Bitcoin is currently testing the aggregate cost basis of these short-term holders for the third time since October. This specific cohort, which has a realized price between $79,000 and $80,000, has historically shown far greater emotional reactivity and momentum-driven panic than long-term market participants.

The two previous times Bitcoin tested this specific threshold, the market experienced aggressive capitulation. In late October 2025 and January 2026, optimism briefly returned as unrealized losses compressed, but fading momentum forced these whales to rapidly distribute their holdings into weakness.
