Bitcoin traded at $79,614 in Asian hours Friday, down 1.6% over 24 hours but still up 3.3% on the week, after pulling back from a Wednesday high of $81,500 that was the highest print since late January.

Ether dropped 2% to $2,278, dogecoin slid 3.8% to $0.1063, XRP fell 1.7% to $1.38, and BNB shed 0.7% to $638. Solana and TRON held in green territory at $88.14 and $0.3474 respectively. Dogecoin is the only major coin in the red on the seven-day tape.

The pullback came as U.S. forces fired on Iranian targets after attacks on American naval destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, per reports.

Kelp DAO claimed LayerZero approved the single-verifier setup later blamed for the attack.  LayerZero CEO Bryan Pellegrino rejected that account and said Kelp moved away from a default multi-verifier setup. However, some sections in the text that are “in square brackets” have drawn attention, raising concerns that some critical clauses previously thought to be agreed upon may still be open to change.

At a pivotal moment for the future of money, last week an evidence session with the Bank of England offered something we do not often get: a clear, candid readout from the heart of the UK’s monetary authority on how it views digital assets, systemic stablecoins, and the digital pound.

After 18 months deeply engaged in the digital assets regulatory debate, as co-chair of the APPG on Digital Markets and Digital Money, I came away with two overriding impressions: the Bank is listening, and the Bank is cautious. Both are understandable. Neither, on their own, will be sufficient.

Let’s start with the positive. The tone of engagement matters, and it is improving. The Bank’s willingness to absorb and reflect on feedback, particularly on its consultation into systemic stablecoins, is both genuine and welcomed. This is not a regulator operating in isolation; it is one actively trying to understand how innovation is unfolding in real time.

That matters because stablecoins are no longer theoretical. Properly structured, they offer the prospect of faster, cheaper, more programmable payments. Improperly handled, they introduce risks that go to the core of financial stability. The Bank’s recognition of both sides of that equation is reassuring. It is taking the time to get this right. But here is the rub: time is not a neutral variable.

We are operating in a global financial system where capital, capability and confidence move quickly. Other jurisdictions are making calls, some more permissive, some more experimental, all reflective of their own economic priorities. The Bank is right when it says “their economies are built differently.” But markets are global. And innovation does not wait f

ETF flow concerns added to the pressure. Institutional demand through spot Bitcoin ETFs has been the backbone of this cycle’s rally. Any signal that those flows are slowing or reversing tends to amplify selling across the board.

On May 7, DeFi liquidity provider TrustedVolumes was exploited for $6.7 million. The attacker was linked to a prior hack on 1inch, raising concerns about interconnected vulnerabilities across DeFi protocols. Large Ethereum whale wallets moved funds to exchanges shortly after, a classic signal of impending selling pressure.
