Bitcoin: Why are traders linking 5.14% treasury yields to a BTC supercycle?Is the global financial system heading toward a breaking point?

So far in 2026, markets have repeatedly raised the possibility of a 2008-style crash. Based on current macro data, this is no longer just a theory. The main driver behind this narrative is rising borrowing costs.

Sovereign debt markets are under clear pressure. The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield has moved above 5.14%, while Japan’s 10-year government yield has climbed to 2.80%. Together, these moves are tightening global liquidity. Yet, in this setup, some in the market are viewing it as a potential trigger for a Bitcoin [$BTC] supercycleThe key question is, why would this be bullish for $BTC?

Notably, it comes down to rising debt and spending. The U.S. is now above $39 trillion in debt, while Treasury demand is weakening. At the same time, massive AI infrastructure spending is driving up demand for energy, chips, and materials, adding structural inflation pressure. In fact, recent reports suggest around $725 billion could be spent on AI infrastructure in 2026 alone, reinforcing that trend.

Against this backdrop, rising yields are putting government borrowing under pressure. With debt already at elevated levels, higher interest costs make it harder for the government to keep financing at the same pace. Naturally, this also puts pressure on the Federal Reserve, increasing uncertainty around further rate hikes.

Accordingly, some analysts view this as a potential trigger for Bitcoin’s supercycle.

U.S. Bill Proposes 1 Million Bitcoin Reserve with 200,000 BTC Annual Purchases
A new bill in Congress aims to formalize the United States’ Bitcoin strategy by creating a federally managed reserve that could eventually hold up to 1 million BTC.

The bill, known as the American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026 (ARMA), was introduced last week by Republican Congressman Nick Begich and Democrat Jared Golden.

Notably, the bipartisan bill seeks to establish a national Bitcoin reserve under the management of the U.S. Treasury Department while also creating separate repositories for other digital assets held by the federal government.

Under the bill, federal agencies would be required to fully disclose and transfer any digital assets under their control into centralized government custody overseen by the Treasury Department. The legislation also calls for quarterly public reporting, independent audits, and congressional oversight to ensure transparency regarding the nation’s digital asset holdings.

One of the bill’s key provisions would require Bitcoin held in the reserve to remain untouched for at least 20 years. According to the proposal, any sale of reserve BTC would only be permitted if used specifically to reduce national debt obligations.

Begich emphasized the importance of protecting federal digital assets from political shifts.

“The American Reserve Modernization Act (ARMA) ensures digital assets in the possession of the federal government will be consolidated across government and protected as a reserve asset for future generations, protecting these assets from the whims of Congress or future administrations,” he tweeted.

The legislation also reinforces the rights of American citizens to own, store, and transfer digital assets without government interference.

Crypto sentiment platform Santiment said in a report on Friday that sharp outflows from BTC ETFs indicate retail capitulation, which has “historically correlated with conditions favorable for patient accumulation” for long-term holders rather than panic. 



CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost said in a post on X that BTC’s apparent demand has dropped to about -147,000 BTC, the most bearish since December 2025. That suggests a sustainable rally would be difficult without the support of genuine spot demand. However, the analyst added that the current environment creates “interesting opportunities for long-term investors capable of remaining patient.”

In a fireside chat moderated by Goldman Sachs’ Ken Tang, Zhou highlighted Bybit as a key infrastructure player in the crypto space. He argued that the current financial system is hindered by geographic constraints and delays, while tokenization enhances the efficiency of global asset movement.

With the tokenized Treasury market exceeding $2Bn and ongoing projects across Asia-Pacific and Europe, Zhou’s insights align with Goldman Sachs’ interest in evaluating tokenization and related crypto products, marking a significant interaction between the crypto exchange and the financial institution.

The T+2 settlement standard, which requires equity trades to clear two days post-execution, creates counterparty risk and capital lock-up that can be eliminated through tokenized infrastructure. Atomic settlement allows for simultaneous asset transfer and payment in a single on-chain transaction, reducing the need for central clearinghouses and the associated reconciliation delays.

Zhou views this shift as a structural redesign, predicting that many traditional financial assets will be tokenized, enhancing their transferability and efficiency. This is especially relevant for institutional participants facing intraday margin calls on assets tied up until T+2 clears.

It is no wonder that Goldman Sachs is increasingly interested in Stablecoins, as they play a crucial role in settlement mechanisms and are becoming integral to global value transfer. Zhou believes this infrastructure will eventually become seamless for users, much like TCP/IP on the internet. Bybit’s MyBank initiative aims to connect traditional banking with blockchain liquidity to tackle on-ramp issues that limit institutional trading volume.

Strategy retired $1.5 billion in convertible debt at an 8% discount, bringing its holdings to 843,738 BTC as it actively rebalances its capital structure.

Strategy paused its bitcoin buying machine last week and turned it on debt instead, retiring $1.5 billion of its own convertible bonds at a discount — a move that signals the company is managing its capital structure with the same aggression it once reserved for accumulating bitcoin.
From May 11- May 25, Strategy repurchased $1.5 billion in aggregate principal of its 0% Convertible Senior Notes due 2029, paying approximately $1.38 billion in cash — an 8% discount to face value, the company said. The savings of roughly $120 million reduced the company’s total convertible note obligations from $8.2 billion to $6.7 billion.
Executive Chairman Michael Saylor framed the transaction on X with characteristic brevity: “This week we bought bonds, not bitcoin. The ₿itVac is charging.”
The repurchase drew down Strategy’s cash reserve to $871 million. That reserve, established in December 2025 to cover preferred stock dividends and debt interest payments, now stands as a liquidity buffer CFO Andrew Kang said the company plans to rebuild through future Digital Capital, Digital Credit, and Digital Equity sales.

With Polkadot upgrading its staking model, will validators finally be risk free?

Polkadot has come up with a major change in its network’s staking model. Polkadot OpenGov is scheduled to vote on Referendum 1890, which would mandate that each validator self-stake at least 10,000 $DOT of their own money.

Since many validators currently depend on nominator capital, this rule would directly increase the economic risk for the validators instead of the nominators.

Assessing present-day Polkadot infrastructure
For context, Polkadot employs a two-player team-like system known as Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS). In this case, validators are in charge of operating the computers that process transactions and maintain network security.

Nominators, on the other hand, are regular $DOT holders who lend their $DOT to validators to improve them rather than operating computers themselves.

In exchange, they receive a portion of the benefits. Currently, the risk is being shared by validators and nominators. Therefore, the new modifications would serve as a prerequisite for two additional staking upgrades.

Referendum 1890 – A catalyst for the network’s staking model?
The first prerequisite is “nominators becoming unslashable,” and the second is the “fast unbonding.”

Currently, even if the user does nothing wrong, they would still lose money if they had lent their $DOT to a validator and they made a mistake. In this new system, the slashing risk would be directly borne by validators.

Instead of immediately burning the money of numerous small stakers, any validator that misbehaves or goes offline would first lose its own 10,000+ $DOT bond. While their principal would be protected, nominators could still receive rewards.
