Bitcoin has spent years moving almost in sync with U.S. stocks, especially technology shares. When the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 rallied, Bitcoin usually rallied harder. When equities crashed, Bitcoin often fell even faster.

But 2026 has looked very different.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq recently reached fresh all-time highs, fueled by strong corporate earnings and the ongoing artificial intelligence boom. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has remained stuck below $80,000, trading well below its late-2025 peak of $126,000.

The divergence has surprised many investors because crypto and equities have become deeply connected over the last few years. Yet this cycle shows that Bitcoin is still influenced by its own unique market forces, not just risk appetite on Wall Street.

Wall Street Is Rallying Without Bitcoin

The recent stock market rally has been extremely strong. In April alone, the Nasdaq-100 surged 15.7%, its best monthly performance since October 2002, while the S&P 500 climbed 10.5% to new record highs.

Technology giants tied to AI infrastructure have been the biggest drivers. NVIDIA continued its massive run as demand for AI chips exploded. Alphabet also jumped after reporting strong earnings and increasing its planned AI-related spending for 2026.

Bitcoin also rose in April, gaining roughly 14%, but that rebound came after heavy losses earlier in the year. January saw Bitcoin fall 10.7%, while February brought another 14.8% decline. Overall, Bitcoin remains down about 10% year-to-date even as stocks continue setting records.

That gap has created one of the clearest examples in years of equities rallying while Bitcoin struggles to keep pace.

Strategy CEO Phong Le says company will sell BTC only in specific cases

Strategy's Bitcoin sales will not move the markets, despite it owning more than 4% of the digital currency's maximum supply, Le said.Phong Le, the CEO of Bitcoin treasury company Strategy, outlined conditions during an interview on Friday, under which the company would sell some of its Bitcoin holdings. 

The company will sell Bitcoin to pay the dividend on its Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock (STRC), a corporate credit instrument that pays an 11.5% dividend to holders, and to defer or offset taxes, Le told CNBC. He added:

“I believe in math over ideology, and at the point where selling Bitcoin versus selling equity to pay a dividend is better for our Bitcoin per share, and for our common shareholders, we will do it.”
Le added that the company would only sell BTC to pay for the yield owed to holders of its credit instruments if the sales are “accretive” to Strategy’s shareholders, meaning the company increases the BTC per share metric.The comments came after Strategy co-founder Michael Saylor said that the company might sell portions of its BTC periodically, stoking fears among BTC investors about the potential impacts of Strategy’s sales on Bitcoin’s market price.

It might be too late for bitcoin’s quantum migration, Project Eleven report argues



More than $3 trillion in digital assets could eventually become vulnerable to theft within the next four to seven years, according to a new report from Project Eleven.

Project Eleven focuses on post-quantum security and migration for digital assets and recently announced a collaboration with the Solana Foundation to prepare its network against the threat of quantum computing.

“The digital asset industry holds over $3 trillion in aggregate value, and virtually all of it is secured by the same class of cryptographic primitive: elliptic curve digital signatures,” which are vulnerable to quantum computing attacks, the report said.

But it is not only crypto that is at stake here. The report states that the same public-key cryptography security used by bitcoin, ether and stablecoins also underpins banking systems, cloud infrastructure, authentication networks and military communications.
