7 Bitcoin Mining Pools Back Stratum V2 as Miners Push for Block Template Control

Antpool, F2pool, Foundry, Spiderpool, Block Inc., MARA Foundation, and DMND are now part of the effort to advance the open mining protocol standard. The announcement was published by Pavlenex on the Stratum V2 Working Group’s official site.

Stratum V2 replaces Stratum V1, a push-based protocol released in 2012 by Marek “Slush” Palatinus that became the industry default but was never designed as a formal standard. V1 left pools in full control of transaction selection, ran in plaintext, and exposed miners to hashrate hijacking and surveillance.

The newer protocol addresses those problems. It uses end-to-end authenticated encryption, cuts bandwidth use by roughly 60% on the pool side and 70% for miners, and introduces a Job Declaration sub-protocol that lets miners build their own block templates instead of accepting what pools assign.

According to the official announcement, “By maintaining Stratum V2 as a public, vendor-neutral specification, we remove compatibility barriers and allow the ecosystem to focus on what matters most: improving efficiency, privacy, security, and miner autonomy, ultimately leading to increased profitability.”

Crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) disclosed through Coinbase Support that a May 7 outage disrupted core trading services after failures spread through Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. Around 8 p.m. ET, Coinbase systems flagged high error rates across multiple services before tracing the disruption to failures tied to an AWS availability zone in the US-EAST-1 Region.

The crypto firm noted its systems were designed to withstand a single-zone outage and recover quickly, but the disruption expanded beyond the exchange’s expected single-zone recovery conditions. Users experienced trading interruptions while AWS teams worked to restore temperature controls and related Amazon Managed Services. Coinbase Support stated in a May 8 post on X:

“We observed failures impacting multiple AWS zones, which caused an extended outage of core trading services.”

The outage followed the crypto exchange’s May 7 first-quarter earnings release, which highlighted record crypto trading volume market share, $202 billion in quarterly trading volume, and annualized retail derivatives revenue above $200 million. The Nasdaq-listed crypto firm also reported $294 billion in assets held on the platform during the quarter.

Earlier updates from Coinbase linked the disruption to increased temperatures in the affected Availability Zone, use1-az4. The company said trading would be re-enabled gradually by first placing all markets into “Cancel Only” mode before restoring full trading access. Coinbase later posted at 3:48 a.m. on May 8 that all markets had been re-enabled for trading on Coinbase Exchange.

new 110-page report from Project Eleven warns that more than $3 trillion in digital assets secured by elliptic curve cryptography could become vulnerable to quantum attacks within four to seven years.
The report says a “Q-Day” — when quantum computers can break widely used public-key cryptography — could arrive as early as 2030 and no later than 2033, threatening blockchains, banking, cloud systems and military communications.
Migrating global financial and digital infrastructure, including Bitcoin, to post-quantum cryptography could take a decade and is hampered less by technical limits than by the need for costly, highly coordinated action across users, institutions and networks.
