Activists failed to gather enough signatures for Swiss Bitcoin reserve referendum.

Crypto activists attempting to compel the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to include Bitcoin in its reserves failed to gather the necessary signatures for a referendum, reports Reuters.

Under Swiss law, 100,000 signatures were required within 18 months to bring the initiative to a national vote. However, the activists managed to collect only about half of the required number with just weeks remaining before the deadline.

“We knew from the start that it was a long shot. For now, we will let the initiative lapse, but progress towards the goal has been made,” said campaign founder Yves Bennaim.

The organizers of the Bitcoin Initiative proposed that the central bank hold the first cryptocurrency in its reserves alongside gold, dollars, and euros. They argued this would help diversify risks associated with fiat currencies.

The SNB has repeatedly opposed the idea of holding cryptocurrencies in its reserves. The head of the regulator, Martin Schlegel, pointed to high volatility, insufficient market depth, and the complexity of using digital assets for monetary policy purposes.

Last year, the price of Bitcoin fell by approximately 6.4%, and it has lost another 7.5% since the beginning of this year. However, with daily transaction volumes in the “tens of billions of dollars,” the asset is not illiquid, noted Bennaim.

According to him, the Bitcoin Initiative was an attempt to encourage the national bank to explore a technology that is transforming global finance.

“Bitcoin is an alternative to the dollar or euro, and like Switzerland, it is internationally neutral,” stated the crypto activist.

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 as crypto liquidations reached nearly $300 million. Traders reduced leverage across major assets. TON stood out as short positions faced heavy pressure.Bitcoin dropped below $80,000 late Thursday after fresh US airstrikes in Iran rattled risk markets and pushed Brent crude briefly above $100. The move triggered heavy crypto futures liquidations, with nearly $300 million in leveraged bets wiped out over 24 hours. Long traders carried most of the losses as the market pulled back from recent gains.

The decline came as traders were already cautious. Strategy chairman Michael Saylor said the company could consider selling Bitcoin to cover dividend payments from STRC. That marked a shift from its earlier ‘never sell’ stance.

Meanwhile, Ether traded at $2,280 after losing 0.2% since midnight UTC and about 2% over 24 hours. Other altcoins also weakened, with Monero and Dash falling between 4% and 5%.

Bitcoin Drop Pressures Leveraged Traders

Bitcoin’s move below $80,000 did not erase its wider recovery from late March. The asset had climbed from around $65,000, keeping its broader rebound intact.

Still, traders continue to watch the $75,000 level closely. A break below that area would cancel the recent pattern of higher lows. It would also signal a return to the earlier trading range.

The latest futures data showed clear deleveraging after the overnight drop. Cumulative industry notional open interest fell more than 1.5% to $131.5 billion. At the same time, trading volume declined more than 12% to $191 billion.

This shift showed that traders reduced exposure after Bitcoin lost momentum. Many had entered the weekend positioned for further gains. Instead, the market weakness forced rapid exits.

A key question now is whether Bitcoin can hold above its recent structure, or whether fresh selling pushes it back toward the old range.

Ethereum (ETH) continued to trade sideways on Friday following a volatile week marked by a broader crypto market downturn.

Notably, the cryptocurrency posted a modest gain of roughly 1% over the past seven days, even as selling pressure weighed on many digital assets.

Meanwhile, Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, continues to argue that Ethereum remains undervalued at current levels and that ETH’s value may not improve significantly in the future, but he strongly believes it could reach $22,000 by 2028.

His perspective is tied not only to Ethereum’s expanding role in decentralized finance and tokenized markets but also to broader crypto-cycle dynamics. In a recent commentary, Lee highlighted Bitcoin’s price behavior as a crucial macro signal for the entire digital asset market. 

“If Bitcoin were to close above $76,000 for the month, it would strongly suggest that the bear market phase is over,” he noted.

According to him, consistent monthly increases in Bitcoin have historically marked the bearish-to-bullish transition regimes. He emphasized that while short-term rebounds can occur within bear markets, as seen in previous cycles like 2022, true trend reversals are typically confirmed only after multiple consecutive monthly closes in the green.

Additionally, according to popular analyst Ali Martinez, Ethereum has recently reached a crucial on-chain threshold known as the Realized Price, currently positioned around $2,380. This level represents the average price at which every ETH token last moved on the blockchain, effectively reflecting the collective cost basis of market participants.

The pundit explained that this zone is significant because it often acts as a psychological and structural boundary in market cycles.
