Coinbase-backed x402 is pushing AI payments closer to mainstream adoption with the launch of batch settlement technology designed for high-frequency AI agent transactions.

The new feature allows AI agents to process thousands of microtransactions offchain before settling them together onchain in a single batch. This dramatically reduces gas costs and makes payments as small as $0.0001 economically possible for services such as AI compute power, inference requests, APIs, and automated digital resources.

According to Coinbase and Base creator Jesse Pollak, the system works by allowing buyers to deposit ERC-20 tokens into an onchain escrow while AI agents sign offchain payment vouchers for every request. Sellers can instantly verify those vouchers, provide the requested service, and later settle many transactions together through a single onchain settlement.

The development comes shortly after Amazon Web Services integrated Coinbase’s x402 protocol and wallet infrastructure, enabling AI agents to make USDC payments on Base and Solana without exposing private keys. This marks another major step toward machine-to-machine economies powered by crypto infrastructure.



Coinbase says x402 processed more than 169 million payments involving over 590,000 buyers and 100,000 sellers during its first year. The protocol is based on the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code and is becoming one of the leading standards for autonomous AI commerce.

Batch settlement also introduces near gasless experiences for AI agents because deposits, refunds, and settlement transactions can be sponsored by facilitators. In addition, the protocol supports any Ethereum-native ERC-20 token instead of limiting payments only to stablecoins.

Charles Schwab has begun rolling out spot bitcoin trading to retail clients in the United States, marking a major expansion of crypto access through one of the country's largest brokerage firms.

The company announced Tuesday that an initial group of eligible customers can now trade bitcoin through its new platform, Schwab Crypto. The launch gives retail investors direct access to digital assets inside Schwab's existing brokerage ecosystem, rather than through third-party exchanges or exchange-traded funds.
