LayerZero says it ‘made a mistake’ in $292 Million Kelp exploit

LayerZero said late Friday U.S. time that it “made a mistake” allowing its own verification infrastructure to secure high-value crypto assets in a vulnerable configuration, marking a notable shift in tone after weeks of blaming developer Kelp DAO for a $292 million hack tied to North Korean attackers.

The admission marks a notable shift after weeks of public finger-pointing between LayerZero and Kelp over responsibility for the April hack, which LayerZero had initially framed as an application-level configuration failure by Kelp.

“First things first: an overdue apology,” LayerZero wrote in a blog published Friday.

LayerZero initially blamed Kelp, arguing the protocol had chosen a risky “1-of-1” configuration in which only a single decentralized verifier network, or DVN, needed to approve cross-chain transfers, creating a single point of failure. A DVN is part of the infrastructure that verifies whether a transaction moving assets between blockchains is legitimate.

“We made a mistake by allowing our DVN to act as a 1/1 DVN for high-value transactions,” the company said. “We didn't police what our DVN was securing, which created a risk we simply didn't see. We own that.”

To counter this, LayerZero Labs said its DVN will no longer service 1/1 DVN configurations. Additionally, "all defaults on all pathways are being migrated to 5/5 where possible and no less than 3/3 on any chain where only 3 DVNs are available," the blog said.

Cross-chain bridges act like digital transfer rails between otherwise separate blockchain networks, but have long been among crypto’s most vulnerable pieces of infrastructure.

LayerZero maintained that its underlying protocol was not compromised and reiterated that developers are ultimately responsible for configuring their own security assumptions.

Shiba Inu has recently shown signs of short-term recovery, posting moderate gains across several timeframes. Over the past month, the asset climbed 9.58%, while also rising 3.12% in the last seven days and 2.4% within the past 24 hours. However, growing exchange inflows now threaten to weaken the token’s recovery momentum.

Notably, more than 67 billion SHIB tokens flowed into exchange reserves within a single day, suggesting that many holders could be preparing to sell or secure profits after the recent rebound.

US Spot Bitcoin ETFs have officially recorded their 6th consecutive week of net inflows, marking the longest positive streak since August 2025. Over the past six weeks, these ETFs attracted more than $3.4 billion in fresh capital, showing that institutional interest in Bitcoin remains strong despite ongoing market uncertainty.

The strongest week during this rally brought in nearly $1 billion in inflows, while the latest week alone added over $622 million. This sustained momentum highlights growing confidence among investors who continue accumulating Bitcoin through regulated financial products.

However, the week ended with noticeable outflows on Thursday and Friday, suggesting that traders became cautious ahead of important US economic data, especially the Non-Farm Payrolls report. Analysts believe uncertainty around the labor market, interest rates, and geopolitical tensions near the Strait of Hormuz contributed to the sudden slowdown.

At the same time, Bitcoin briefly dropped below the $80,000 level, increasing volatility across the crypto market. Liquidation heatmaps indicate that the $78,000 zone remains a critical support area, while strong short positions between $82,000 and $83,000 continue creating pressure on price action.

Meanwhile, Spot Ether ETFs also returned to positive territory, recording more than $70 million in weekly inflows after previously seeing outflows. This recovery suggests that investor appetite for digital assets remains active even during periods of market stress.

The current ETF inflow trend is being closely watched because many analysts consider institutional money flow one of the most important indicators for Bitcoin’s long-term direction. If inflows continue in the coming weeks, market sentiment could strengthen further across the entire crypto sector.

After examining Ethereum whales‘ holdings, Ali Charts, a seasoned market expert and trader, revealed that these key investors are exhibiting a trend not seen in over a year. While ETH’s price is slowly losing its upside momentum, a major wave of selling has rattled the ETH market.

This heightened selling activity was observed among large investors or whales holding between 1,000 ETH and 10,000 ETH as they dump nearly a quarter of their holdings in the face of uncertainty. Such a trend underscores a major decrease in exposure, which raises questions about confidence and short-term market stability.

Since October 6, 2025, Ethereum holders between 1,000 and 10,000 ETH have undergone a notable regime shift in their market activity. Prior to the shift, the cohort was spotted in a steady accumulation phase. During the period, these investors’ ETH portfolio saw a rise from 12.95 million ETH in April 2025 to a peak of 15.95 million ETH by October 6, 2025. Fast forward to May 2026, and this behavior has flipped again.

In an X post, Bull Theory stated that the Russell 2000 just gave the same signal that has triggered every major Bitcoin bull market in the past. The pundit further revealed that this index has broken out after consolidating for 64 months, which is its longest base in over 20 years. This matters because of how a bull run has followed every breakout.

The pundit pointed to the fourth quarters of 2012, 2016, and 2020, when the Russell broke out, after which Bitcoin bull markets followed. Now, the Russell has broken out again after 64 months, which is 17 months longer than the consolidation prior to the three previous breakouts. Bull Theory explained that the Russell 2000 is a leading indicator of liquidity and risk appetite, as when small caps rally, it means that capital is flowing to risk-on assets such as crypto.

Bull Theory also noted that the length of this consolidation matters, as it means liquidity was constrained for an unusually long time. However, the breakout signals that conditions have materially changed. Furthermore, the pundit stated that the ISM Manufacturing PMI confirms liquidity expansion, as the Bitcoin cycle has historically begun 4 to 5 months after the PMI bottoms.

As such, Bull Theory believes that the small caps and the PMI are sending the same message that liquidity is rising and risk appetite is returning, which means that the setup for a new Bitcoin bull market is here.
