Ripple SVP Confirms $XRP Is Essential to $RLUSD on XRPL

At Consensus 2026 in Miami, Ripple SVP Jack McDonald delivered one of the clearest explanations yet of how $XRP and $RLUSD work together. His message was unmistakable: $RLUSD isn’t replacing $XRP, it relies on $XRP to function on the $XRP Ledger.

Explaining how $RLUSD functions on the $XRP Ledger, McDonald emphasized that $XRP remains essential to the network’s infrastructure. As the ledger’s native gas token, $XRP powers every $RLUSD transaction processed on XRPL behind the scenes.

While reinforcing $XRP’s central role in facilitating activity across the network, he said:

“Everything that we’re doing on the $XRP Ledger with $RLUSD requires us to use $XRP.”

McDonald described $XRP as the “grease in the wheel” powering $RLUSD activity on the $XRP Ledger, highlighting its critical role in enabling fast and efficient transaction flow across the network. His remarks push back against speculation that $RLUSD could diminish $XRP’s importance.

Instead, Ripple appears to be strengthening a dual-asset ecosystem where $RLUSD delivers price stability while $XRP continues to power liquidity, transaction fees, and core network functionality.

In Ripple’s evolving ecosystem, $RLUSD is being positioned as a stable settlement asset for transactions that require minimal price volatility, while $XRP continues powering liquidity, bridge transfers, gas fees, and core activity across the $XRP Ledger.

On 6 May, Aave liquidated the thief’s eight identified positions across Ethereum and Arbitrum markets. Recovered rsETH collateral was later moved directly towards the Recovery Guardian without impacting Umbrella stakers or unaffected users.

Initially, the exploit triggered fears of deeper insolvency pressure and wider liquidity fragmentation across DeFi lending markets.

Meanwhile, Mantle DAO overwhelmingly approved participation in the broader DeFi United recovery coalition. Arbitrum DAO also advanced proposals seeking to return roughly $71 million in recovered $ETH to affected Aave users.

However, ongoing legal disputes are still threatening to delay final recovery efforts, while also affecting broader confidence stabilization across DeFi markets.As Aave stabilized liquidity conditions after the rsETH exploit, broader recovery efforts increasingly shifted towards coordinated DAO-led remediation. Arbitrum DAO overwhelmingly approved releasing roughly 30,766 $ETH, worth nearly $71 million, to the DeFi United recovery initiative.

These actions reflected how DeFi governance increasingly depends on rapid ecosystem coordination during large-scale stress events.

However, legal pressure soon complicated the process after a U.S court restrained portions of the recovered $ETH over unrelated North Korea-linked claims. This dispute increasingly tied DeFi recovery mechanisms closer towards traditional legal systems.

While legal integration may strengthen long-term institutional confidence, it could also slow decentralized recovery execution during future exploit-driven crises.

Bitcoin scam: ED arrests hacker Sriki, two others
Stepping up the investigation following recent raids, officials of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Saturday arrested prime accused in the Bitcoin scam case, Srikrishna alias Sriki, along with two others in Bengaluru.
The ED arrested Sriki, Robin Khandeval and Sunish Hegde in connection with the alleged cryptocurrency scam. The trio was produced before a special ED court, and taken into custody for 10 days for further interrogation.

The central agency has been probing the alleged Bitcoin scam for the past several years over accusations of illegal cryptocurrency transactions, hacking and financial irregularities.
As part of the ongoing investigation, ED officials had recently conducted searches at multiple locations linked to the accused and their associates.

The case had earlier sparked major political controversy in Karnataka, with allegations surrounding the handling of seized bitcoins and the possible involvement of influential persons.

On April 20, the agency carried out raids at 12 locations, including premises allegedly linked to Sriki, the sons of Shantinagar MLA N.A. Haris,  Mohammed Haris Nalapad and Omar Farook Nalapad, and Mohammed Hakeeb Khan, the grandson of former Union Minister K. Rehman Khan.

The case is related to a 2017 hacking incident involving national and international websites, in which bitcoins were allegedly stolen by Sriki and his associates. Mohammed Haris and Omar Farook are allegedly suspected to be beneficiaries of the proceeds of crime. Investigators believe that bitcoins hacked from a Dubai-based crypto exchange were routed to the Nalapads, with the ED tracking the digital trail.

The ED also raided the residence of Mohammed Hakeeb Khan. Officials alleged there were suspicious money transfers through his bank accounts, prompting the searches.

The San Antonio City Council unanimously passed an ordinance requiring businesses operating Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency ATMs to post anti-fraud warnings. These signs, to be produced by the San Antonio Police Department, must be clearly visible.

City leaders stated that fraudsters are creating fake government phone numbers, impersonating corporations or other officials, and pressuring victims to pay fraudulent fines through Bitcoin ATMs.

City Councilor Terry Castillo stated that this move aims to encourage people to do their due diligence before paying amounts that may be difficult or irreversible.

Executives from MoonPay, Ripple, and Paxos said at Consensus Miami 2026 that stablecoin regulation has accelerated institutional adoption but that major infrastructure and privacy gaps still block mainstream use.

Top executives at three of the most active stablecoin companies told the Consensus Miami 2026 audience on May 8 that new US regulation has fundamentally changed the competitive landscape for dollar-pegged tokens, bringing traditional financial institutions into a market that was previously difficult for them to enter. The shift, however, has exposed a new set of problems the industry has yet to solve.

Richard Harrison, MoonPay’s vice president of banking and payment partnerships, said the passage of the $GENIUS Act gave firms across traditional finance a regulatory framework to operate within. “What $GENIUS brought us was clarity,” Harrison told the panel, noting that traditional finance firms are now entering stablecoins at a faster pace because compliance is easier to evaluate.

Harrison compared the current state of stablecoin adoption to electric vehicles: the core product works, but mass-market take-up depends entirely on the supporting infrastructure. “How do you use stablecoin to pay your rent?” he said. “How do you use it to buy a cup of coffee?”

Institutional demand versus real-world usability

Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president for stablecoins, told the panel that institutional clients are focused less on market capitalisation and more on practical details: regulatory compliance, custody security, and whether stablecoins can do something useful beyond trading.

McDonald said Ripple continues to concentrate on treasury operations, collateral management, and cross-border payment settlement as the primary enterprise use cases, arguing that utility must drive adoption rather than speculative interest.
