Bitcoin pushed above $82,000 on Sunday after a volatile session tied to fresh geopolitical headlines and continued institutional demand. The move came as spot Bitcoin ETFs extended their inflow streak and traders reacted to progress around US crypto regulation.

Bitcoin briefly dropped from $81,430 to $80,520 after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest peace proposal, calling it “totally unacceptable” in a Truth Social post. Markets initially reacted to fears that tensions in the Middle East could drag on longer than expected.

The sell-off did not last long. Bitcoin reversed sharply and climbed nearly 2.3% within three hours, reaching $82,347. More than $126.76 million in short positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours, according to Coinglass data. At press time, Bitcoin trades around $81,700 after briefly touching its highest level since May 6.Spot Bitcoin ETFs remain one of the biggest drivers behind the current rally. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $622.7 million in weekly net inflows last week, extending the current inflow streak to six straight weeks.

The funds have now attracted more than $3.4 billion during that six-week stretch. Institutional demand continues to tighten available supply as ETF issuers keep accumulating Bitcoin from the open market.

Analysts also pointed to improving regulatory conditions in the United States. The Senate Banking Committee confirmed it will hold a markup hearing for the CLARITY Act on May 14, reviving momentum around one of the crypto industry’s most important market structure bills.

Importantly, even with the geopolitical volatility, Bitcoin has gained nearly 30% since the US-Iran conflict began on Feb. 28. The asset has outperformed both gold and the S&P 500 during that period.

Earlier this year, in January 2026, the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) flagged specific concerns about crypto assets being used to hide illicit funds connected to sanctions violations.

The compliance mandate that took effect on May 1 tells every UK-registered crypto exchange and service provider: if a sanctioned entity touches your platform, that’s your problem now. The cost of getting it wrong isn’t just a fine. It’s potential criminal liability.

This latest sanctions package didn’t trigger any immediate, observable price movements in major tokens. Analysts have estimated that a potential 5-7% dip in trading volumes could hit crypto platforms that have exposure to Russian users or operations, particularly if future sanctions rounds begin targeting digital asset entities directly.

Crimenetwork, one of the largest German-language darknet marketplaces, apparently didn’t get the memo the first time. After being taken offline in late 2024, the platform relaunched and managed to rack up roughly 22,000 users, over 100 vendors, and at least €3.6 million in revenue before German authorities pulled the plug again.

A 35-year-old German man was arrested in Mallorca, Spain, under a European arrest warrant on charges related to running the revived marketplace. Authorities seized approximately €194,000 in illicit assets alongside substantial user and transaction data.

The original Crimenetwork takedown happened in December 2024, when Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Central Office for Combating Cybercrime (ZIT) shut down the platform and confiscated around €1 million in digital assets. That operation was considered a significant blow to regional cybercrime infrastructure.

The revived version offered the same greatest hits: illegal drugs, malware, stolen personal data, and counterfeit documents. Transactions were primarily conducted in Bitcoin, leveraging the cryptocurrency’s pseudonymous properties to obscure the flow of funds between buyers and sellers.

The original Crimenetwork operator was sentenced to 7 years and 10 months in prison, with over €10 million in proceeds forfeited in March 2026. That sentencing sent a clear message about the legal consequences of running darknet infrastructure, but it evidently didn’t deter someone else from stepping up to take over.

The arrest in Mallorca highlights the increasingly international nature of these investigations. Using a European arrest warrant to detain a suspect in Spain for crimes facilitated through German-language infrastructure hosted on the dark web requires coordination across multiple jurisdictions.
