White House: Killing CLARITY Act over stablecoin yield ‘achieves nothing’

Resumen

The White House and crypto industry leaders are opposing efforts by the banking lobby to ban stablecoin yields, warning that killing the CLARITY Act over this issue "achieves nothing" and preserves the status quo. Over 125 crypto firms and organizations have urged Congress not to amend the stablecoin law (the GENIUS Act) to favor banks. Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin argued that allowing yields reinforces U.S. competitiveness and consumer freedom. Conversely, banks view stablecoin rewards as a risk to deposits and financial stability, citing potential systemic impacts from crypto market shocks. Crypto executives, including Coinbase's Brian Armstrong and Galaxy's Mike Novogratz, maintain that yields are crucial for global competitiveness and won't harm lending. The issue is expected to be contentious during the upcoming markup of the crypto market structure bill on January 15th.

The gloves are off as the crypto and banking lobby escalate their fight for stablecoin rewards ahead of the crypto market structure bill markup.

For the banking industry, the markup of the crypto bill (CLARITY Act) presents the best opportunity to ensure that stablecoin yields are banned, thereby protecting its turf.

Otherwise, it would be forced to seek an amendment of the stablecoin law, the GENIUS Act.

To counter banks, the crypto industry has heightened pressure on lawmakers. And the sector also has the support of the White House.

In a statement, Patrick Witt, Executive Director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, slammed the stablecoin yield critics.

He warned that they would “preserve the status quo” and “achieve nothing” if the bill fails because of the yield issue.

Crypto leaders defend stablecoin yield

Over 125 crypto firms and organizations had written to the Congress, urging lawmakers not to amend the GENIUS Act to banks’ interests.

Echoing the same, Joseph Lubin, Ethereum co-founder, said that keeping the stablecoin yield would reinforce U.S. competitiveness. He added,

“We shouldn’t undercut this world-changing innovation by restricting consumer freedom to put their money to work. The GENIUS Act was careful not to do that.”

Banks aren’t backing down

The banks, on the other hand, have continued to express strong criticism of stablecoin rewards, viewing them as a risk to deposits and a threat to their financial lifeline.

Additionally, they argued that crypto shocks, such as the October 10 crash, could affect the broader financial system.

On his part, Brian Armstrong, Coinbase CEO, also maintained the ‘national security’ and global competitiveness argument. He downplayed banking sector fears on stablecoin yield and cautioned,

“I worry we are missing the forest through the trees in the U.S. rewards on stablecoins will not change lending one bit – but it does have a big impact on whether U.S. stablecoins are competitive.”

For Mike Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy, reversing the GENIUS Act would be “foolish,” and he urged banks to “toughen up and compete.”

The recent discussion on yield underscores that it will likely be one of the contentious issues during the markup scheduled for the 15th of January.

Along with DeFi regulation and ethics provisions targeting President Donald Trump, these issues could be deal-breakers, according to some policy watchers.

Final Thoughts

  • Stablecoin yield debate puts crypto market structure bill, CLARITY Act, at risk.
  • For crypto supporters, the yield would make the U.S. competitive, but for banks, it would heighten financial risk and dent deposits.

Coldcard Hardware Wallet Hacked: Losses Mount Due to Vulnerable Seed Generation A critical vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets has led to a continued wave of fund thefts. According to Galaxy Research, the total stolen has reached 1,367.05 BTC (approx. $88.6 million) from 4,585 addresses, a significant increase from the initial 594.5 BTC reported on July 30, 2026. Most of the stolen funds remain on the attackers' addresses. The issue is not with the current firmware, which Coinkite has updated, but with seed phrases generated on vulnerable devices between March 2021 and the release of fixed firmware versions. Due to a programmer error, devices switched from using a hardware random number generator to the software-based Yasmarang generator, which was initialized with publicly accessible data like the chip's serial number. This made the seed phrases predictable through offline brute-force attacks, meaning wallets remain at risk until funds are moved to a new wallet generated with the patched firmware. Affected devices include Mk2/Mk3 with firmware 4.0.1–4.1.9 (and up to 5.0.3), Mk4/Mk5 up to version 5.6.0, and Q models up to 1.5.0Q. The only exceptions are seeds created with a high-entropy method like at least 50 independent dice rolls or a strong unique BIP-39 passphrase. All other owners must generate a new seed on the fixed firmware and transfer their assets. A case highlighting the human impact involves a 39-year-old long-term investor who lost 2 BTC (approx. $130,000) in minutes. He had accumulated the Bitcoin over eight years through physical labor, viewing it as a financial lifeline and a retirement plan in a country suffering from hyperinflation. His story underscores that even conservative "buy and hold in cold storage" strategies can be compromised by such underlying technical flaws. From a technical perspective, this incident echoes historical failures where weak random number generators undermined cryptographic security, challenging the assumption that offline storage is automatically foolproof.
