US-Venezuela Tensions Could Accelerate Latin American Crypto Adoption

ccn.comPublicado a 2025-12-11Actualizado a 2025-12-11

Resumen

Tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela escalated after American forces seized an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast, causing the bolivar to plummet. This event threatens to further destabilize Latin American economies, potentially accelerating the adoption of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in the region. Venezuela, already suffering from years of hyperinflation, has seen the U.S. dollar—often in the form of stablecoins like USDT—become a de facto currency for daily transactions. Mobile crypto wallets and payment apps have gained significant traction, with stablecoins accounting for a growing share of remittances. The trend extends beyond Venezuela. High inflation and economic instability across Latin America are driving crypto adoption. Countries like Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil are increasingly turning to digital assets for payments and as a store of value. Regional crypto activity grew 60% in the year to July, with Brazil leading much of this expansion. As geopolitical tensions rise, the move toward crypto in Latin America appears set to intensify.

Key Takeaways
  • U.S. forces seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday.
  • Escalating tensions threaten to destabilize Latin American economies.
  • Economic volatility has been a key driver of crypto adoption in the region.

When American forces seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday, Dec. 10, it caused the bolivar to drop sharply.

But after years of hyperinflation, dollars, often in the form of stablecoins, have already replaced the local currency for many transactions.

Across Latin America (LATAM), escalating tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela threaten to destabilize already struggling economies, accelerating the flight to crypto and stablecoins.

Desperate for Adoption

After several decades of high inflation, the dollar has become the de facto everyday currency for most Venezuelans.

Alongside a thriving black market for U.S. banknotes, stablecoins, particularly USDT, have also gained prominence in recent years.

Visitors to the country report widespread adoption of Tether’s digital dollar, while many businesses also accept USDC and Bitcoin.

Driving Venezuela’s crypto economy, mobile apps like CrixtoPay and Coco Wallet have racked up hundreds of thousands of downloads.

Meanwhile, by 2023, stablecoins powered an estimated 9% of inbound remittances—a figure that is likely to have risen since.

According to research by Chainalysis , in the year to July 2025, Venezuela received $44.6 billion in crypto value.

As the U.S. flexes its naval muscles in the Caribbean, Venezuela faces the looming threat of armed conflict and the economic fallout it inevitably brings.

However, history suggests it won’t be easy to oust President Nicolas Maduro’s regime.

Against this backdrop, opposition leader María Corina Machado has called Bitcoin a “lifeline” for Venezuelans that “has evolved from a humanitarian tool to a vital means of resistance.”

Latin America’s Booming Crypto Market

The same forces driving crypto adoption in Venezuela can be observed across Latin America.

While Argentina’s inflation rate has cooled off since 2023, it remains above 40% according to the International Monetary Fund.

To a lesser degree, Bolivia and Suriname have also struggled with high inflation, and the major economies of Brazil and Colombia are only slightly better off.

Venezuela and Argentina have already seen stablecoins emerge as a widespread payment instrument.

USDT is also gaining ground in Bolivia, where major carmakers, including Toyota, BYD, and Yamaha, now accept Tether’s digital dollars

Elsewhere, crypto is increasingly used as a store of value and hedge against economic instability.

In the year to July, Latin American crypto activity grew 60%, more than any other region except Asia Pacific, Chainalysis found .

Brazil, in particular, has emerged as a crypto powerhouse, accounting for nearly one-third of all LATAM crypto activity.

In a region where geopolitical shocks increasingly translate into digital asset adoption, every new flashpoint between the U.S. and Venezuela only strengthens the forces already driving Latin Americans to embrace crypto.

MiCA is coming for DeFi vaults, but regulation will be difficult

The European Commission is exploring whether to extend the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation to cover decentralized finance (DeFi) lending and borrowing, including lending vaults. These vaults, which channel billions into on-chain credit markets, present significant regulatory challenges because their decentralized structure doesn't map neatly onto existing financial frameworks. Their legal status is currently based on non-binding interpretations that they fall outside MiCA and EU fund rules. The article uses Morpho's decentralized lending protocol as an example, illustrating how responsibilities are divided among various participants (owner, curator, allocator, sentinel), making it difficult to identify a single "provider" to regulate. Experts warn that broadly categorizing "DeFi lending" could inadvertently capture vastly different structures. They argue that any regulatory approach should focus on the specific structure and control mechanisms of a vault, rather than using decentralization as a simple dividing line, and that DeFi lending may require a dedicated, carefully crafted framework distinct from traditional finance. The Commission's consultation closes on September 30, 2026. The core challenge for regulators is not just whether to regulate DeFi lending, but how to design rules that distinguish between different forms of on-chain lending and the entities that control them.

Grayscale Report: Financial Privacy in the AI Era, Why Zcash Should Not Be Overlooked?

Title: Grayscale Report: Financial Privacy in the AI Era – Why Zcash Should Not Be Overlooked The article argues that privacy is a fundamental, not niche, attribute of functional money. It highlights that technological shifts, like the rise of AI and stablecoins, are driving a new wave of public focus on financial privacy. Zcash, a decentralized digital currency similar to Bitcoin but with built-in privacy via zero-knowledge proofs, is positioned to address this need. Unlike transparent blockchains, Zcash offers users the option to conduct "shielded" transactions that hide sender, receiver, and amount while remaining verifiable. The report details Zcash's evolution, noting key upgrades that improved usability and security. It points to rising on-chain usage of privacy features as evidence of real demand. Currently, ZEC holds a minimal share (~0.4%) of the total crypto market cap. Grayscale suggests this reflects a market assumption that privacy is a marginal concern. The investment thesis hinges on a potential market re-evaluation: if privacy is recognized as a core monetary feature in an era of enhanced surveillance, Zcash's current valuation represents significant upside potential. Key risks discussed include regulatory challenges, historical trusted setup concerns for older pools (mitigated by newer protocols), quantum computing threats, and execution risks associated with future technical upgrades. The conclusion is that while the future scale of private digital currency is uncertain, the market currently prices in little chance of its value increasing substantially, presenting a potential opportunity for investors.
