French Tax Agency Admits Data Leak: Hacker Stole 678,000 Records

Resumen

A significant data breach has occurred at France's General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP), with a hacker known as "Zerobytes" stealing 678,438 taxpayer records. The attacker claims to have infiltrated internal servers via a VPN using an internal search tool. Although access was cut off, preventing a full data download, the stolen file is reportedly being sold for thousands of euros. The DGFiP confirmed the June 12th attack, stating it immediately disabled all compromised accounts but admitted its access controls failed to detect the sophisticated data theft. The agency assured that website login credentials remain secure and announced new security measures. It will directly contact affected individuals next week to inform them of the specific data likely viewed or extracted and any necessary precautions. The breach has heightened fears among French cryptocurrency holders of potential "key attacks," as France has seen a rise in crypto-related crimes. Following the incident, calls have emerged for a moratorium on state data collection until security improves. By April, French authorities had charged 88 individuals in 12 crypto-related kidnapping cases, with 41 attacks recorded.

A new threat has emerged for cryptocurrency owners in France after malicious actors gained access to a large amount of taxpayers' personal information.

A hacker using the pseudonym Zerobytes managed to steal data of 678,438 taxpayers, extracted from the website of the General Directorate of Public Finance (DGFiP). According to local reports, the attacker claims to have breached internal servers using an internal search tool via a VPN.

The perpetrator, who also appears to have been involved in previous attacks on French institutions, had his access cut off and was unable to retrieve all DGFiP taxpayer data. Nevertheless, the file is being sold to interested parties for several thousand euros.

The DGFiP confirmed that the attack occurred on June 12, emphasizing that it "immediately terminated access to all accounts used in the identified incidents," but "the access control measures taken in this case did not detect that these intrusions resulted in data theft, due to the sophistication of the attack."

The agency also clarified that the data necessary to access the website was not compromised and reported implementing new security measures to prevent similar leaks in the future.

"Next week, the DGFiP will directly contact each of the affected individuals and professionals. They will receive individual information by email or post specifying the data that was likely viewed or extracted, and, if necessary, precautionary measures to be taken," the agency concluded.

French cryptocurrency owners expressed their concern on social media, fearing that this new leak could trigger new "key attacks" against them. France has become a hotbed for such crimes after a tax official allegedly sold data on high-status cryptocurrency owners.

Alexander Stachtchenko, head of strategy and communications at Bitstack, called for a moratorium on the collection of personal data by government agencies, stressing that France has endangered taxpayers.

"Demand a moratorium: stop collecting data until the state learns to protect what it holds. Contact your deputies. Share this information. The right to privacy is one of the fundamental freedoms that must be guaranteed," he emphasized.

By April, 88 individuals had been charged in France in 12 cryptocurrency-related kidnapping cases; at that time, 41 attacks had been recorded.

Grayscale Forecasts Increase in Scarcity for Ethereum and Solana

Grayscale Research predicts that Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) could become scarcer assets due to proposed tokenomics changes in their respective blockchains. According to analyst Zach Pandl, both networks are considering protocol adjustments that would reduce the annual issuance rate of their native tokens. The report compares projected annual supply inflation over the next five years, estimating it could fall to around 0.4% for Ethereum and 1.1% for Solana by 2031, lower than gold's estimated 1.8% annual supply growth. Pandl notes that while the changes are still under community discussion, Solana's proposals have broader support and a higher chance of implementation. Reduced inflation would directly impact network stakers, as their rewards are funded by new token issuance. While stakers would receive fewer new tokens, the potential scarcity could support the market price of ETH and SOL. Non-staking holders could benefit directly from the decreased supply. For Ethereum, the debate on scarcity includes proposals like EIP-8363, which would burn a portion of staking rewards. Pandl concludes that the proposed changes would increase the scarcity of both assets and could create upward pressure on their prices. The analysis also notes Solana's ongoing infrastructure development, including the Alpenglow upgrade to speed up transaction finalization and significant growth in its tokenized asset ecosystem.
