The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) announced a meeting of a committee that advises the agency on policy issues, including possible ways to regulate cryptocurrencies in the absence of Congressional action.
In a notice published on Thursday, the CFTC said it will hold a meeting of its Technology Advisory Committee on August 20, dedicated to the regulation of crypto assets and artificial intelligence, as well as prediction markets. Among the possible discussion topics related to cryptocurrencies are "areas where regulatory measures could complement future legislation from Congress." This likely refers to the U.S. Senate's failure to advance the Clarity for Digital Tokens Act (CLARITY) before starting its August recess last week.
The CFTC's announcement came after a similar notice from the SEC about a meeting scheduled for Friday. The agenda indicated that the commission intends to discuss "new rules to create a special offering regime for certain investment contracts related to crypto assets." A commission representative added that it will support Congress's efforts to pass a market structure law, but until its passage, the SEC will advance cryptocurrency regulation "within [its] authority."
Michael Selig remains the only CFTC commissioner confirmed by the Senate and the acting chairman of the agency. At the same time, there are no signs that U.S. President Donald Trump intends to announce additional candidates for leadership positions at the commission. Although other CFTC staff will join the acting chairman on August 20, the absence of a full five-member, bipartisan commission has prompted many lawmakers to call on the president to take action.
