Mining company Riot Platforms has signed a 20-year agreement to provide 191 MW of power at its site in Rockdale, Texas, to a "leading developer of advanced AI," according to a press release published on Monday.
The client is Anthropic, and the deal is worth approximately $9 billion, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Cointelegraph has requested comment from Anthropic and Riot.
Anthropic struck a $19 billion deal on July 6 for a 20-year data center lease with bitcoin miner TeraWulf.
The agreement adds to the list of bitcoin miners expanding their business into AI and high-performance computing. These include Bitdeer, CleanSpark, MARA Holdings, Core Scientific, Hut 8, and IREN.
On Monday, Riot's stock fell by 5.4%, but surged over 21% in after-hours trading. Year-to-date, the shares are up over 53%, according to Yahoo Finance data. Riot ranks as the world's fourth-largest mining company with a market capitalization of $7.33 billion, according to CompaniesMarketCap data. In a July report provided to Cointelegraph, Bernstein analysts indicated that partnerships between AI companies and bitcoin miners are necessary to address the electricity shortage hindering the development of AI data centers.
