Quantinuum and Taiwanese computing infrastructure manufacturer Quanta Computer have entered into an agreement to jointly develop a hardware platform for future large-scale quantum systems.
The companies aim to transition the manufacturing of quantum equipment from laboratory setups to a more modular and industrial model.
From Laboratory to Industrial Production
As part of the agreement, the companies plan to jointly develop the hardware infrastructure, systems engineering, and production processes for the next generations of Quantinuum's quantum computers. Work has already begun: the partners are designing new components with an emphasis on their modularity, reproducibility in manufacturing, and further scalability.
For Quantinuum, this partnership addresses one of the industry's key challenges—transitioning from creating individual complex setups to producing systems that can be manufactured and deployed in large quantities.
"It's time for quantum computing to move from physics achievements in the lab to achievements in manufacturing systems that can be deployed and operated at scale," said Quantinuum CEO Raj Hazra.
Quanta Computer, in turn, possesses experience in the industrial manufacturing of complex computing infrastructure. The Taiwanese company is one of the world's largest manufacturers of servers and systems for cloud and high-performance computing.
Betting on Trapped Ions
The partnership is directly related to the trapped-ion architecture used by Quantinuum. The company builds its processors based on QCCD (Quantum Charge-Coupled Device)—an approach where ions are moved between separate zones within a quantum system.
What are Quantum Computing and Quantum Computers?
Quantinuum has already commercially deployed several generations of such systems. The company claims its QCCD implementation has achieved some of the best two-qubit operation fidelities in the industry.
The next stage will be creating the infrastructure capable of supporting significantly larger systems with error correction.
Quanta to Help Solve the Scaling Problem
Quanta specializes in transforming complex computing architectures into industrially manufacturable systems and global supply chains.
Quantinuum expects that the joint work will enable the synchronous development of technology, manufacturing, and supply chains. This approach should reduce the gap between creating a quantum computer prototype and its commercial deployment.
However, the companies have not yet disclosed specific volumes of future production, the value of the agreement, or timelines for launching serial production of new systems.
Quantinuum Accelerates Commercialization
The partnership with Quanta follows several recent steps by Quantinuum towards commercializing its technology. In August, the company signed a multi-year agreement with Oracle, under which its Helios quantum computer will be hosted in an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure data center and made available to clients of the cloud platform.
Furthermore, Quantinuum recently reported achieving a nearly 800-fold increase in logical fidelity on Helios.
Recall that in May, IBM Quantum's Global Director of Sales, Petra Florizone, announced the beginning of the practical era of quantum computing. According to the expectations of the corporation's head, Arvind Krishna, investments in this direction will begin to be "noticeably" reflected in profits as early as 2028.
