Crypto ATM Giant Bitcoin Depot Warns Of Possible Collapse

Resumen

Crypto ATM operator Bitcoin Depot has warned of potential collapse in an SEC filing, citing "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue. The company faces a severe crisis driven by a sharp $80 million revenue drop in Q1 2026, a $9.5 million net loss, and over $20 million in legal judgments. Intensifying regulatory pressure is a key factor, including a proposed nationwide ban on crypto ATMs in Canada and multiple lawsuits from U.S. states like Massachusetts and Iowa. These actions, alongside enhanced compliance controls, have drastically reduced customer transaction volume. The company's stock (BTM) plummeted over 40% in five days. In a leadership change, former MoneyGram CEO Alex Holmes replaced Scott Buchanan in March, bringing compliance expertise to navigate the challenging legal and regulatory landscape. The future of the business remains highly uncertain.

Bitcoin Depot had roughly 220 machines running in Canada when the Canadian government released its Spring Economic Update in April, proposing a nationwide ban on crypto ATMs to combat scammers and money launderers. The timing could not have been worse for the company.

A Company Running Out Of Room

The Atlanta-based crypto kiosk operator disclosed in a Form 10-Q filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday that management has “substantial doubt” about whether the business can keep running.

Chief financial officer David Gray cited more than $20 million in legal judgments accrued in the fourth quarter of 2025, alongside a wave of lawsuits from state regulators and a sharp drop in transaction volume.

Revenue fell by $80 million in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier. The company also posted a net loss of $9.5 million over those three months.

Officials pointed to tightening regulations and enhanced compliance controls as the main reasons customers are using the machines less.

States Are Closing The Door

The legal pressure started before the Canadian proposal. In January, Bitcoin Depot paid close to $2 million to Maine’s Consumer Credit Protection Bureau to settle a complaint.

Massachusetts, Iowa, and other states have since filed their own actions against the company. Individual cities and towns have also moved to restrict or ban crypto kiosks, with local officials citing concerns about residents falling victim to scams.

Shares of Bitcoin Depot, which trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker BTM, dropped more than 40% over five trading days, sliding from $5 to $2.90.

In March, the company replaced CEO Scott Buchanan, who had held the position for just three months, with Alex Holmes.

Holmes ran MoneyGram from 2016 to 2024 and is known for his background in regulatory compliance — a skill set Bitcoin Depot clearly needs right now.

Leadership Shift, Uncertain Road

The company’s SEC filing described the revenue decline as being driven by a combination of regulatory impacts and enhanced compliance controls.

Reports indicate Bitcoin Depot is trying to manage existing legal exposure while adapting to a market that looks very different than it did a year ago.

Whether the new leadership can stabilize the business remains to be seen. The machines are still running. The lawsuits are not stopping. And the regulatory walls are getting closer on both sides of the border.

The Perfect Founder-Market Fit: Bear Markets Are the Ultimate Test

"Founder-Market Fit in a Bear Market: The Ultimate Test" While AI captures the vast majority of venture capital and attention, the current crypto bear market is revealing the strongest cohort of founders in four cycles. These operators, hailing from institutions like Goldman Sachs, Citadel, and Stripe, are not chasing narratives. They are converging on the now-compelling "hard problem" of institutional-grade financial infrastructure. Founder-market fit—the alignment between a specific founder's unique capabilities and a specific market's needs—is the most durable signal in venture. Products, markets, and regulations change, but this fit compounds even when prices don't. The bear market is the best environment to identify it. Talent is now concentrated on two serious verticals: AI and fintech. The quality of founders choosing blockchain for finance is unprecedented. Evidence is in who's building: founders from elite traditional finance backgrounds are tackling on-chain institutional infrastructure (e.g., Ondo's Nathan Allman, Offchain Labs' Ed Felten). Market data supports this shift, with tokenized real-world assets and stablecoins growing significantly and major banks launching products. The author evaluates founders on four traits: 1) Deep domain expertise (lived experience, not just theory), 2) High agency (ability to sell a vision based on deep market understanding), 3) Unfair network advantage (relationships that accelerate execution), and 4) Obsession (long-term commitment rooted in belief, not hype). In a bull market, momentum does the work. A bear market strips that away, leaving only belief—the observable output of true founder-market fit—as fuel. This period filters out tourists, leaving builders who see the long-term opportunity. For serious operators considering the space, the bear market is not a risk but a proving ground and the cleanest environment to build compounding advantage. The commitment is to back such founders at the intersection of market and conviction, as in every prior cycle.

Shing-Tung Yau Invites Wang Hong and Deng Yu to Teach Back Home, After 20 Years of Rivalry, Tsinghua and Peking University Realize the Opponent Isn't Each Other

On July 23, the Fields Medal, the highest global mathematics award, was awarded to two Chinese mathematicians, Wang Hong and Deng Yu, both undergraduate classmates from Peking University's class of 2007. This marks the first time mathematicians who completed their undergraduate studies in mainland China have won the prize, with two laureates in the same year. Following the announcement, renowned mathematician Shing-Tung Yau publicly invited Wang and Deng to return to China to teach at Tsinghua University's Qiuzhen College. This invitation is the latest episode in a decades-long rivalry between Tsinghua and Peking University (PKU) for supremacy in Chinese mathematics. The competition traces back to a 1952 national university restructuring that transferred Tsinghua's entire mathematics department to PKU, leaving Tsinghua without a math program for nearly 30 years until its reinstatement in 1979. The rivalry intensified in 2005 with a public falling-out between Yau and his former student, PKU professor Gang Tian. Subsequently, Yau shifted his efforts to building Tsinghua's mathematics program from the ground up. He established the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center in 2009 and founded the Qiuzhen College in 2021, implementing an elite, accelerated "Math Leadership Program" to recruit prodigies as young as middle school students. The competition spans multiple fronts: recruiting top junior high and high school students from math olympiads, luring renowned scholars from overseas, and securing research funding. A new and fierce battleground has emerged in AI and mathematical reasoning. Both universities are heavily investing in AI research to enhance large language models' mathematical capabilities, with Tsinghua collaborating on projects like the STARE algorithm and PKU developing specialized models for geometry. Despite the intense competition, this rivalry has arguably elevated China's overall standing in mathematics. Chinese mathematicians now frequently publish in top journals and win major international awards. At the recent 17th Yau College Students Mathematics Contests, PKU students swept the top individual awards. Yau, presenting the awards, emphasized the need for inter-university collaboration to advance Chinese mathematics. The landscape is now shifting with the rise of AI in mathematical research. As AI begins to generate proofs at an unprecedented rate, the traditional metrics of competition between institutions may become less relevant. The future for mathematicians, as noted by Terence Tao, is navigating an era of "proof surplus" driven by AI, presenting a new common challenge that transcends university rivalries.
