Mt. Gox Delays Repayment Deadline Again to October 2026

Mt. Gox, the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange, has once again postponed its long-awaited repayment deadline, moving it to October 31, 2026. The announcement came on Monday from Rehabilitation Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi, just a few days before the previous deadline of October 31, 2025.

Third delay in the repayment schedule

This marks the third extension of Mt. Gox’s long-awaited repayment process, which was initially set for October 31, 2023. Despite progress in reimbursing creditors, the trustee said many claimants still haven’t received their funds due to incomplete procedures or technical issues during processing.

In the official notice, Kobayashi explained that while the base repayment, early lump-sum repayment, and intermediate repayment have been “largely completed” for creditors who fulfilled all requirements without complications, a significant number remain unpaid.

“As it is desirable to make the repayments to such rehabilitation creditors to the extent reasonably practicable, the Rehabilitation Trustee, with the permission of the court, has changed the deadline for the repayments from October 31, 2025, to October 31, 2026,” the announcement stated.

Progress so far

It’s been almost ten years since Mt. Gox went down, and creditors are still waiting to get their money back. The Tokyo-based exchange, once the world’s leading Bitcoin trading platform, collapsed in 2014 after losing around 850,000 BTC in a massive hack — one of the worst the crypto world has ever seen. The scale of the loss forced Mt. Gox to freeze withdrawals and file for bankruptcy, shaking global trust in cryptocurrency exchanges.

In September 2023, the trustee handling the case announced a plan to repay creditors using the assets that had been recovered over time. These included about 142,000 bitcoin (BTC), 143,000 bitcoin cash (BCH), and roughly 69 billion Japanese yen, which comes to around $510 million in cash.

By the middle of 2024, repayments finally started going out to some creditors through major exchanges like Kraken and Bitstamp, which were selected to assist with the distribution. On March 27, 2025, the trustee confirmed that around 19,500 creditors had finally received their repayments in Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH).

Remaining assets and ongoing delays

Even after all this time, plenty of creditors are still waiting to get paid. Some couldn’t finish the verification steps, and others got stuck because of technical problems or missing documents that slowed everything down.

The process remains complicated and far from over. In its latest notice, the trustee said that repayments will continue “to the extent reasonably practicable,” pending court approval.

According to on-chain data from Arkham, Mt. Gox still holds 34,689 BTC, valued at roughly $4 billion. These remaining assets will likely form part of future distributions once pending issues are resolved.

Next steps for creditors

Creditors seeking updates or assistance are advised to use the Mt. Gox Online Rehabilitation Claim Filing System via claims.mtgox.com. However, the trustee warned that due to the high volume of inquiries, responses might be delayed.

With this new delay, Mt. Gox’s long repayment process stretches into 2026, leaving thousands of creditors waiting even longer to get back the funds they lost nearly a decade ago.

What to Expect from Bitcoin's Price After Today's Sharp Surge? Only One Hurdle Left to Overcome!

Bitcoin ($BTC) surged sharply after the U.S. Treasury Department announced expanded liquidity support for the long-term bond market, triggering one of the largest short liquidations since October 2020. According to Michael Nagye, founder of The DeFi Report, the timing of Bitcoin's jump followed the Treasury's announcement of enhanced long-term bond buyback operations starting in September. Nagye views this as a second "moderate quantitative easing" measure implemented recently to alleviate pressure on long-term Treasury yields. He noted that gold reacted first to the macroeconomic shift, followed by Bitcoin. However, a significant portion of Bitcoin's move was attributed to short liquidations and market positioning changes rather than new, sustained spot demand. As Bitcoin approaches the $68,000-$69,000 range, key technical levels are back in focus: $68,500 (short-term holder cost basis), $68,800 (21-week moving average), and $69,100 (200-day moving average). The current price action is seen as crucial in determining whether the uptrend will continue. While the rally is notable given the Treasury's actions, Nagye emphasized it remains largely liquidation-driven at this stage. The key question now is whether sustainable market demand will emerge to support further gains. If Bitcoin can break through and convert the $68,500-$69,100 resistance zone into support, it could pave the way for a new bullish rally.

LATEST NEWS: Long-awaited Fed meeting minutes released! Here's what you absolutely need to read

The Federal Reserve has released the highly anticipated minutes from its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting held on July 28-29. The minutes revealed that while most Fed officials supported holding the federal funds rate steady at 3.50-3.75%, a minority advocated for a 25-basis-point increase. A key consensus was that interest rates may need to remain high for longer, and further hikes could be necessary if inflation does not continue to decline. Inflation concerns were central to the discussion. Officials broadly agreed that risks to inflation remain elevated, with some noting that current financial conditions might not be sufficiently restrictive to bring inflation back to the Fed's 2% target. They observed that price increases have been broad-based across many categories of goods and services. The minutes noted that financial conditions had tightened between meetings, partly driven by market expectations of tighter Fed policy. Some officials viewed this market-driven tightening as having already done some of the Fed's work. Staff economic forecasts saw little change in inflation outlook but a slightly downgraded growth forecast. Other points included assessments of financial stability, with some officials flagging a potential sharp correction in AI-related stocks as a risk. The minutes also covered operational topics, such as the effective handling of a payment system glitch and a proposal—though not adopted—to reduce the number of annual policy meetings. The committee affirmed its commitment to maintaining the phrase "will ensure price stability" in its policy statement.
